ED Kids

I'm applying to Swarthmore. Gasp. I know. Traitor

That's not okay, man (or woman).
You're a applying to a safety school anyway.
(like that I'm already getting in the Haverford spirit?)

Clearly. At least I can a apply without typos (hopefully you could too). So you're not applying to Swat regular if you don't get into H-ford? (I just LOVE that nickname. It's so cute.)

Oh, Swattie. And Halima, you're going to get in! THEY' RE MAILING THE ENVELOPES ON MONDAY! AAAH! And, I live in an awful demographic: Newton, MA, site of the "Amazing Girls" article by the NYT last year (kids who would have been my classmates had I gone to public school). I am having my PG year now during which I have interned with Sen. Ted Kennedy, Rep Balser (currently) and John Kerry (late spring). So whoooo hs class of 2007. We'll be Hav '12. I know it. I feel it in my painfully emerging wisdom tooth. AHAHAHAAHAHAH a few more days.

I just found this site by accident. I applied ED too and was wondering if you have all been calling admissions even after Nov.15. I did that back then to make sure my app was complete (it was), but now reading these notes I'm nervous because I haven't been calling them since then. Should I? I visited campus 3 times: once unofficially this summer without an official escort, just to walk around, a 2nd time with my mom to meet the coaches, and did a 2 night overnight visit-with classes and interview in the fall. After that one, I told my mom "I am soooo going here." I really just knew this was where I belonged. These are the most amazing people I have ever met and I met a lot more than the sports team guys. And even if I couldn't play the sport I am being recruited for, that would still be true. Even if I got injured or something, this is the best place for me to go to college. I overnighted at 5 of my other choices, and I've visited the campuses (and met the coaches) of at least 10 other colleges and none of them came close.

I want to know though: Do they really mail the notices this coming Monday? And the acceptances are really thin envelopes?

I am so wanting to go to Haverford. I want to know what my chances are but I don't want to say too much about myself just yet, so it's making me nuts! I already read those admissions articles at the New York Times.

I guess I can't NOT ask: The coaches there told me that, for my position, I'm their top pick of all the recruits at that position, both academically as well as athletically but I know that's no guarantee. I think they really need a new recruit in my position in this sport this year. My Sats are definitely in the range but not as high as some others I've seen posted here. I'm #6 in my class of 155, in the top 4%, and the coaches said my HS is more rigorous than some others they've seen so my rank is worth more than being valedictorian at those other schools ( I guess they heard this from admissions?). I've taken/am taking 4 of the 6 AP courses my HS offers (I wasn't advanced enough in Math to take Calculus but I'm going to become a HS history teacher so maybe it shouldn't matter so much?). In High Honors track for 2 years (moved up from Honors track after soph. year to test my abilities, that's why I didn't take the other 2 AP courses, there wasn't room as I'm also taking High Honors Physics now). On High Honor Roll all 13 semesters of HS so far. Sats 690 V, 650 M, 700 W, 680 on both Subject tests (Bio-Molecular and US History). Gpa is like a weighted 4.2 or 4.3 out of 5. First semester Sr. year grades excellent. Will probably take 2 more APs (Amer.Govt, French) and/or more Subject Tests (Lit., Math1C, French) in the spring for placement. I'm meeting the requirements for the # of courses in English, Math and Soc. Studies, EXCEEDING required units of science Labs (by 2), French (by 1) and Soc.Studies/History (by 1), and EXCEEDING RECOMMENDED units of Science (by 1).

Outside class, I've been doing lots of local community and church youth group activities since 2002. (I'm now joining the Knights of Columbus too) 4 years serving as a leader on the annual youth Retreat team in my church. 4 years Key Club. 3 years Campus Ministry club. Altar Server since 1999. School Ambassador talking to 8th graders about coming to my HS. I "was discovered" and played a leading/singing role in a local musical comedy as a sophomore and really liked that, even though I was always a set/stage crew manager behind the scenes for years before that. 4 years in French Club (incl. officer). GYLC Scholar. NHS 2 years and French NHS too. Who's Who Among American HS Students for first 3 (maybe all 4?) years. In 8th grade I was asked by the principal to be a peer mediator at school to help out with student conflicts. I love to play chess but I'm no championship competitor like some others I've seen on these websites.

So what does everyone think? And do you have any more info on the first questions I asked up top? Thanks!

This thread isn't really for chancing... we're all kind of here biting our nails in harmony. It sounds like your application has plenty of weight to it though. First, no need to call admissions; if you are calm enough not to have, props to you! Second, Haverford really is mailing out letters (!!!!!!!!) on Monday. As far as I know, the content the envelope is not discernible from its exterior. Good luck and hope to see you next fall!

Halima, did you want the RD run down?

Sorry, froghorn, I don't do forums a lot, so I don't know about starting new posts. Should I still do that? I guess it's after the fact so probably not. Thanks a lot for the reply and for being so helpful. (I played first chair trombone in grade school but haven't really played since then, who knows, maybe I'll take it up again at HC and we'll be in something together!) Good luck to you too. I am going to jump sky high if I'm in.

:) goal_troll. I'm Nina. It's not a problem at all. Honestly, these chances posts can't help you much (... admissions officers are not the ones replying) and I know in my case, they make me more neurotic! I know that Hav and BMC have a consorted orchestra (and I'll probably play in Swarthmore's too, should I get in). Good luck and I hope we'll be classmates as of next week. I am too will go insane if I'm in and done! I've been trying to remind myself that I do have other schools in my list which excite me, should I have to apply RD. This thought has been somewhat of a comfort. Argh. Back to waiting. Nina

NINA!!!! Oh my god 3 days!!! Thanks for in the info. Now I am absolutely quaking(Quaker-style) with excitement.
What are you gonna do with yourself for the next few days? I'm gonna try to stay busy. Very very busy.
good luck goal troll. Don't stress out too much(clearly the expert on that).
what info on RD, Nina? Did you mean ED?

Yes, very busy. I have to prepare some speeches for the congresswoman with whom I intern. You'll get it first b.c you live so close; please don't tell me!!! Let's say full (public) disclosure on Friday so that people will have had time to receive them? I bet you'll get yours Tuesday. OMG now I am feeling like I won't get in. ARgh. Oh, and I meant did you want the list of my RD (which of course, I will not need, schools)? AAAAAAAH, Halima, make it END. This is an amazing thread. Once we're all in and done, I'm going to print it. Oh btw, froghorn@gmail.com

Wow, you two seem pretty close. ^^

Good luck, everyone!!! Can't wait!!!!!!

:) Lstern89, join in! Hopefully we'll ALL be close next year!

Wait. T minus 36 hours until I find out. So I'm thinking of calling the admissions office tomorrow and telling them that I'm local and that I'll come to pick up my letter instead of their sending it. Wow.
so how can I not tell you? You'll totally know. Maybe I'll just not go on till Friday.
what are your useless RDs? Any more local(to me) schools?
36 hrs.

I'll make a deal with you, since you can pick it up, and I'm selfish and "quaking like Quaker", how bout if I message you once I get mine (Weds, probably) to say I got my answer and then we disclose? That way those who haven't gotten their letters yet don't have to know either. Will they let you pick up your letter starts looking for plane tix?
Anyways, I am (NOT) applying to: Amherst, Bard, Barnard, Bates, Bryn Mawr, Clark, Wesleyan and Williams. BTW, do you have a facebook? It's going to be a rite of passage to join the Haverford network.

By the way all of you, I have been checking this thread as if it were an online admissions results site. Thanks you guys; you've saved my sanity this weekend!

LOL. I know honestly, its been my lifeline. Yeah, good idea about the private message. They're not going to let you fly here to find out 2 days earlier. (but I suppose they've had a lot of crazies like us ask...)
nice schools. You're gonna get in.
Yay Hav facebook!

whistles Halima and froggie....wow. Invite me to the wedding....

Lstern! We can make it polygamous if you like, always room for more. So here's the deal Halima and I have: we're not telling until we both have our letters. Then we disclose. Wanna join in? Nina

Hi all EDers - please excuse a posting from a parent (I am the CC fan in the family). My daughter is also anxiously awaiting. She is another close-by hopeful; we live just south of Haverford. Froghorn - Did admissions tell you the letters were being mailed today? Will it really come tomorrow? Good luck everyone!!!
