What are my ED/RD chances. I know my rank's a bit low. I'm Asian and from Texas.

GPA - Unweighted: it depends on the scale but on the tougher one where a 90-93 isn't a 4.0 it's a 3.77
on the one where 90-100= 4.0 it's a 3.85
Class Rank: 8/118 around top 7%

I had 5 AP classes available to me freshman through junior year. I took 4 of them and took the test in 2 of them.
5- Apush 4- AP lit

Leadership positions:
Co-founder/Vice President of my schools Spanish Honor Society

300 volunteering with poor people in my parent's home country ( done the summers of my freshman and sophomore year)

100 domestic (50 hospital, 5 domestic)

Steinbeck,

Writing about what you did during the summer you volunteered in your parents’ home country – using lots of vivid details and explaining with passion how it’s helped shape your future goals – could set your application apart. Top 7% is certainly respectable. Go for it!

And, in your essays, you might want to mention specific Rice classes which would bring you closer to realizing your goals. Show the admissions office that you’ve really taken a close look at the courses and the professors who teach at Rice – let them see that you have excellent research skills and that you’ve taken the time to explore what’s available
at Rice.

Hey, thanks for the fast reply. My volunteering there really did impact me, because I worked in a health camp. I went from house to house getting information, and helped people get registered, and saw what the doctors did for them. Would this be a big deal to Rice? I only wen for 2 summers but I got around 150 hours each summer.

I can’t personally say whether it would be “a big deal” for Rice… Was it “a big deal” for you – how so, Steinbeck?

As you know, John Steinbeck’s impact on literature has rarely been measured by the number of words that he wrote … I’m sure you see my point.

What were you doing when you were there? Why did you go there? How has this experience defined your goals? What aspects of this learning experience will you be able to share on campus – if/when you’re fortunate enough to become an Owl …

The only way to get in is to apply! Good luck

The part where Rice says 72% of students are in the top 5% of their class scares me.

It was a big deal for me, because after seeing all those sick people and what the doctors did for them, it made me consider being a doctor. I realized though, that these problems have a deeper cause, so I want to go into a medical research field. I figure pre med at rice would be a great option. Would applying ED help me out, and if I did, would I be a strong applicant?

and

make that aspect about as bland as bland can get. Be sure to focus on specifics on your experiences, your thought processes etc in your essays. Otherwise you will be another Asian from Texas who wants to be a pre-med. (We have a LOT of them)

As Ottoline said

Applying ED will definitely help IF you can articulate how much Rice means to you. Be sure to clearly show your interest and desire to attend Rice.

To clarify, I dont mean to discourage you from applying. All Im saying is you need to really stand out and tell Rice why you want to be the first one admitted. We get a lot of people applying who want to be doctors just because they want to be doctors.

Good luck!
