I've heard that ED is more competitive than reg at UVA. Does anyone have any thoughts? I'm OOS and sure that UVA is my first choice but I'm reluctant to apply early.

the acceptance rates for early and regular are about the same

However, the quality of applicants in early is lower than in regular. It is easier to get in with ED than RD. I don't know why someone would say ED is harder- it defeats the purpose.

Since your OOS, I'm not sure how much it matter. However, typically the IS early applicants are those with lower or marginal stats. For the most part, those with good stats for Instate don't have much of a reason to apply early unless they're absolutely sure UVA is the place they'll go anyway. Otherwise they use UVA as a standard/safety school and apply to other top colleges. This RD admissions pool is obviously more qualified than the students in ED.

Thanks for your replies. But what if I'm a minority student? (hispanic) Does that make any difference?

yea ur an URM.. makes a huge difference (still need decent stats)

whats considered decent?

for a URM i guess you need a 1300 or so outta 1600

that makes sense because a girl (AA) at my school got a 1320/1600 but didnt have as strong courseload or GPA and got waitlisted but she was accepted off the waitlist and she's attending
