ED Thread

I'm really jealous of you all. I didn't decide until about a month ago that Barnard is really my first choice. I wish that it hadn't taken me so long to figure that out, because I have to wait until April to find out whether they'll take me! But good luck to you all in the ED round!

I just got in!!!!!! I'm so excited you have no idea!!!!!!!

this weekend was terrible. I couldn't sleep. all i could think was BARNARD BARNARD BARNARD! Now I know where I'm going and I am SOOOO HAPPY!

Ida, way to go!!! I am soooo happy for you!!

Thank You! I think you talked about how the weekend that your d had to go without knowing was so incredibly miserable, but that monday was amazing?

Well, that's how it was for me!

Yep! That is exactly what happened to us as well. All worth waiting for, though! :)

um... just wondering on a totally unrelated note.. does everyone in columbia hate barnard?

No, absolutely not, Snivellus! From my d's experience, there has been absolutely none of the obnoxiousness that you might have seen on the Columbia forum here at cc, in "real life" on Campus. Aside from jokes during the Varsity Show, that is. Don't even worry about it.

Actually, most of the anti-Barnard remarks I've seen were on facebook. I joined the Columbia facebook group, and they say some pretty not-so-nice things about Barnard students there. Some of the stuff I probably wouldn't be able to even say on here. It seems like the freshmen at Columbia are trying to teach the newly accepted Columbians to hate Barnard students from the start, before they've even met any of them.

I was pretty surprised to see that, because my friend who is in Barnard has a lot of friends from Columbia. I was wondering if her case was out of the norm.

I don't want to whine to you in a PM, so I'll post my thoughts here..

I would never tell people I went to Columbia University without mentioning Barnard along with it. I chose to go to Barnard for a reason, not because it was an "easy" way into Columbia. It appealed to me on so many levels, and it feels sort of strange that people have this prejudice against Barnard students, when they're just as capable as doing well in the classes, playing sports with them, and whatever else. As I'm reading some of the things people have written, it seems so old-age, like what people would have written about Barnard when it first formed, and people were against women having an education.

I hope you did not take what I said in my pm that I ever expected that you would NOT proudly say you went to Barnard! That was supposed to have been a "tongue-in-cheek" sort of cautionary remark (a bit difficult to convey over the internet, however!), and one I really did not think you needed.

Believe me, I have been round and round on these boards (or over at the Columbia one) about people saying that NOBODY would WANT to go to Barnard over CC, that Barnard is not a part of Columbia University, that Barnard students are inferior, etc, etc. Some people just feel threatened or resentful and probalby would target someone else if Barnard were not available.

If people are giving you a hard time on Facebook, just ignore them. They are not worth your time and are probably sporting some sort of inferiority complex any way! :) You will make many, many friends both at Barnard and at CC/SEAS, I am sure.

Snivellus, my daughter has many friends at Columbia. Her closest friend her fall semester freshman year was a guy at Columbia -- spring semester she made good friends and started hanging out all the time with another Columbia guy. (neither was a romantic relationship -- just friends). When I went to visit my d. last March, she took me with her to visit a female friend who is a Columbia student. My d. is an officer in a club -- the other 2 officers are male Columbia student.

Columbia is full of smart, friendly students and also has its share of arrogant or rude students, as well as misbehaving drinkers and rowdy frat boys. So does every other college you could choose. You will have no problem making friends among the nice, friendly people -- and it will be no loss if you stay way from those whose social skills are not up to your standards.

For those of you that were recently accepted to Barnard early decision, would you mind posting your stats? Unfortunately I could not apply ED for financial reasons so I am trying to get a feel for what will happen when I apply RD. Thanks!

I have not experienced ANY anti-Barnard hostility so far. Absolutely none. I mean, maybe some students harbor some disagreements about the institution and its relationship with Columbia, but I don't think ANYONE will give you the cold shoulder if you mention you're from across the street. Barnard girls are people too. (:

I'm glad to hear that the Barnard-Columbia hostility does not really play out in the real world. I have immense respect for the Columbia kids and, were I to attend Barnard, I wouldn't want them to unnecessarily think badly of me. Plus, I hate confrontation and misunderstanding. :)

My D also has a best friends at Columbia, including an ex from freshman year. All guys. She hasn't been quite as lucky with Columbia girls, but she has many girlfriends from Barnard.

Welcome all acceptees to Barnard. I felt a little sad moving my daughter out yesterday. She is going to London for Spring semester and she misses Barnard already.

She's leaving New Year's Day.

Whoa, mythmom! That is kind of interesting as one of my d's very best friends is also going to London for Spring semester and leaves on Jan 1! I know becuase my d said she had dinner with this friend the other night. Wouldn't it be cool if my d's friend was your d??

Several of my d's friends and two of her suitemates will be studying abroad next semester. She will miss them all terribly!!!

Well, I just asked her, and sadly, she said no. And I don't even think they'll be on the same flight because we booked so let I chose one that has to make a stop. Sigh.

Well, I saved $250.00.

D's last year's roommate was supposed to be going as well, but she isn't. And two of her guy friends who were supposed to be at Oxford and Cambridge also stayed home at the last minute, but she has two friends who will be in Great Britain and one who will be in Spain.

I can't believe that the next time she steps on Barnard's campus she will be a senior! Who knows where the time goes, as Sandy Denny said.

She still looks so young she says that on Columbia tours the tour guides yell at her for lagging as she walks to classes.

Congrats to all the new acceptees.
One year ago my daughter was in your situation.
So far, she couldn't be any happier with her choice.

I hope the same for all of you.

I'm signing off CC for a good while (I mean it this time) so good luck to all.

Aww, monydad, I will miss you!!

I'll miss you too. Good luck to both your D's.
