Several parents on the 2012 thread report their kids have been invited to switch EA applications to ED. What's up with that? Is there any advantage to the applicant? Or is all the advantage to the college, allowing them to to lock in yield and strong-arm parents into making a financial commitment?

I have only heard of schools that offer EA OR ED. I don’t understand how they received offers to switch?

D applied EA and we got a letter today asking if she knew about their second ED option and asking if she would like to switch to that. While the school is one of her top choices, she does not have a #1 choice school right now so she would prefer to wait and see.

So looking through the 2012 thread, it looks like this is the U of Rochester. They started an ‘early notification’ program this year, if you had your app in by Dec 1 you would get your decision in Feb. I thought it was a great idea. I think I would be ticked off if they tried to pressure my D into this switch next year. I can’t see a whole lot of benefit to the student, unless s/he is a borderline candidate.
