ED1 Deferred- HELP!

Hi so I applied ED1 to Colby and got deferred and I kind of want to hear some other peoples opinions about my chances in the regular decision applicant pool. To start my GPA is a 3.48 UW and my ACT composite score was a 27. My common app essay was solid, I talked about being perceptually dyslexic in a positive way that explained my low GPA and how my experience has contributed to me as a person (rest assured the essay was not a pity party). My Colby supplement short answer really expressed how much I love Colby in a clear, concise, and creative way. With my application I included a link to my online darkroom photography portfolio. Extra Curriculars: darkroom photography, model un, save Darfur club, field hockey, lacrosse (varsity captain), lifeguard, 45 hours of community service.
Things that may boost my chances: I interviewed early in July and heard from a student I know that works in admissions that my interviewer said it went well. I introduced my self to a Colby alum at my schools college fair, had a positive and genuine conversation, she made a note on my information card that I was a strong candidate. I have visited campus a number of times and checked in at admissions each time. I don’t know if admissions gets notified of this but I contacted and met on campus with an art professor and the assistant director at the writers center. I also have a sibling graduating in 2012 at Colby and my parents are on the Colby Parents Executive Committee.
Why I think I was deferred: low GPA, I got my 1st C in high school in AP Lit and Comp my first trimester of Senior year... my thoughts are they want to see me bring my grades up.
Also note I am almost positive Colby does not reject people from ED so being deferred does not necessarily mean they are interested in me If its of any use I attend an all girls catholic school in NJ and no one else from my school is applying.
All feedback is very much appreciated :)

hey you seem to have pretty good chances at colby, the only thing holding you back would seem to be that C your senior year. Your standardized test scores are also pretty low for Colby. their average is between a 28-31. still keep trying with your grades and you never know! defferal is not a rejection :)

Hi. I was also deferred ED1. My college counselor wasn’t sure why I didn’t get in, because my grades and scores seem spot on for Colby (possibly higher). My overall GPA is probably 3.6, but maybe 3.2/3 my freshman/sophomore years and 3.8+ my junior year and all A’s senior year first ‘window’. My ACT score is a 30. I have been told I’m a great writer- planning on being an english major - and both teachers that read/edited my essays said they were both great. I had an interview that went well, have received 8 varsity letters (will be nine in the spring) and was named all-league last spring. I volunteer and work during the school year and the summer and am the head of my schools Green Team.

My thoughts about why I didn’t get it - I transferred schools after my sophomore year - to a better (private) school. And I am a white girl from outside of Boston. I am told that SO many people at Colby live 20 minutes outside of boston…

so pretty much I’m saying, you’re not alone in your confusion. You said that Colby doesn’t reject ED - are you sure?

-AB

thank you both!
and soccercrazzy2222 im clearly not an expert on this college stuff but it sounds like your obviously qualified to get in to colby and i think your right, its just alot more competitive coming from outside boston because so many people from there apply. also i spoke on the phone with someone at admissions about whether or not colby rejects ED and i didn’t really get a clear answer but I checked the website and found this:
“What happens to my application if I am not admitted Early Decision?
Our admissions committee will review your application once again among all regular applications, and we will notify you of our final decision by early April.”
[Colby College | Admissions & Financial Aid | Early Decision FAQ’s](http://www.colby.edu/admissions_cs/ask/early-decisions-questions.cfm)

it sort of makes it sounds like everyone that is not accepted is moved in to regular decision unless they withdraw their application, which is sort of unsettling

Hey there; hope this will be useful.

I have a father on the board of trustees at this school who is very in touch with the admissions office and familiar with its procedures. Colby doesn’t flat out reject ED students; all are deferred to be compared with Regular Decision students. Don’t be discouraged; they will take the fact that you’re an ED student very seriously, since that means that Colby is your top choice. In other words, if there does happen to be a student with an identicle profile to yours, but is RD, you will most likely be chosen over that other student.

Hope this helped! I wish you luck in your admissions process!
