EDII: pro and con

there are a few threads about this already, but several people are considering EDII and wondering if chances are better in that pool than in RD.

i've already submitted my RD application because i didn't have a clear first choice school at the time. now, Middlebury is by far my first choice. if i ask them to put me in the EDII pool, will my chances be better or worse? they'll know that it's my first choice, right? maybe i should post the rest of my stats....

anyway, i just wanted ONE thread where everyone can chime in about EDII vs RD, because i know i'm not the only one in this situation!

I’m in the same situation. Honestly, I can’t imagine its harder to get in EDII than RD since they know they’re your first choice, but then again, I keep hearing that the EDII admit rate is lower. I’m kind of nervous!

yeah, i read some of your posts. i’m also applying to colby, amherst, and yale, all of which i’d be perfectly happy to attend. but i think i really want to go to middlebury! i guess i could just wait until april to find out, but if EDII would give me a leg up in any way, i want to take advantage of it!

Welcome to the club! I have trouble believing that ED II is harder; besides, who wants to wait out all of March to hear back?

Besides, even if you get rejected from Middlebury in February, you still have 3 great colleges to consider.

i wonder if i can call them an ask if they can give any insight into which pool would be better. edII is binding, so wouldn’t that prove i really want to go to midd?

should i call or email?

I would call for the fastest response.

Would you mind letting us know what they tell you?

ED II would be better than RD for admissions purposes. The admit rate doesn’t mean anything–its just an indicator of how strong the applicant pool was. Your chances will always be better in a binding situation than a non-binding one. If you know Midd is your first choice, apply ED. Besides, you’ll know a lot sooner and be smugly enjoying the winter while your friends nervously pace their living rooms.

the only thing holding me back is that i don’t think i’m a very strong applicant. if the ED pool is stronger than the RD one, then i might not make the cut.

Well, if you do get deferred, you still have a chance in the RD pool. Honestly, I don’t know that the ED pool is necessarily stronger. A lot of people I know apply ED to places b/c they think it will increase their chances of getting in (b/c it shows the college they really want to go there)… So there will be those people in ED as well.
