My EFC is 0, so I should qualify for the Pell, FSEOG and ACG
GPA 3.5 SAT 1300/1970
How much financial aid do you think I could get?

Kentucky: Out of state is approx $16000, the Pell, FSEOG and ACG should bring it down to about $10000. I got a $3000 scholarship, so I still have about $7000 left.

Ohio State: Out if state is approx $22000, but I have almost $10000 in scholarships, + with the Pell, FSEOG and ACG I should have approx $7000 left here too.

I will not be staying on campus because housing costs are just out of the question for me.
My family can't really afford to pay for me, but if they absolutely have they might be able pay max $2000.
Approx. how much aid do you think I will receive? Any help welcome!

z…you apparently are applying to OOS public universities. These schools do not typically meet full need for out of state students UNLESS you qualify for one of their competitive merit scholarships. For Ohio State, you would have needed to apply and already be accepted to be invited to the scholars weekend they have.

I don’t know about Kentucky.

Re: Housing…you might not be living ON campus, but there will still be costs to live OFF campus. You will have to factor in rent of some kind and food, and transportation if your housing is too far from the campus.

Most state public universities feel a responsibility to help the residents of THEIR state whose families support the universities with their taxes. They do not typically offer huge awards (other than competitive scholarships) to out of state students. Neither OSU nor Kentucky guarantee to meet full need for accepted students.

Congratulations on your admission to your instate university with a great scholarship. It sounds like you have one good option in the bag.

I don’t understand the statement in BOLD. Where will you be staying? Wherever you’ll be staying will cost money, won’t it? Even if you rent a room or an off-campus apt, it won’t be free.

Also, you only included Tuition. You didn’t include books, meals, fees, misc costs, etc.

How much are you budgeting for whatever housing you choose, your meals, books, transportation, and misc costs?

You seem to know how much aid you’re likely to receive - Max Pell is $5500 next year, ACG is $750 if you qualify, and FSEOG is a wild card because it depends on the school and their aid policies. You’ll qualify for a subsidized Stafford loan of $3500, and another $2000 unsubsidized. You may be offered work study and a subsidized Perkins loan as well, but again the amounts depend on the school. Other than merit aid, I wouldn’t count on any other institutional aid being offered since you’re OOS.
