Quick questions about pell grant and FSEOG

I'm pretty sure that as a student with 0 EFC, I'll get the full $5500 Pell Grant, but what about the The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)? Does 0 EFC automatically qualify you for $4000 for the FSEOG too? If not, what else do they look for?

Thanks for the info!

No.

SEOG funds are very limited and a school receives only a certain amount of SEOG dollars. Each school sets their own criteria for the SEOG. That is both for eligibility for it and for the amount they will award. At many, but not all, schools the criteria is a 0 EFC. But the maximum varies enormously from school to school depending on the amount of funding they have and the number of eligible students. For instance at both my kids schools the eligibility is a 0 EFC, but at my son’s school the maximum is $200 a year, while at my daughter’s school it is $2,000.

Where I work, 0 EFC gets $500 FSEOG. Over 0 gets no FSEOG. If the student does not take at least 12 credits in a term, the FSEOG award prorates (as does the Pell payment).

If a student does not file FAFSA by the priority date … or if he waits too long to submit the required verification documents … even a 0 EFC will miss out on FSEOG.

Every school is different, though.

Uhg, that’s pretty depressing. Well the school I’m talking about is U of Michigan – Ann Arbor. Any idea how much I’ll get from them?

I’m really worried I won’t get my 0 EFC needs met. What do you guys think?

Are you in state or OOS?

^^^

I think I remember that he’s in-state for UMich.

If you are OOS, your need will NOT be met.

If you are in state, your need may be met. However, UM uses the Profile to collect additional info that may show a different picture than the FAFSA. Sometimes families who actually are in a decent financial situation get a low EFC because of paper losses & hidden assets. Profile helps uncover those things. The majority of low EFC students really are low EFC, though, so Profile won’t change things. UM has been very good for 0 EFC, in state students.

Sorry, I’m definitely in-state :)

For me, the PROFILE doesn’t show anything else that the FAFSA doesn’t show, besides the fact that we bought a 170k house, and payed off about 40k of it. I don’t think this would raise my EFC though would it? I mean all of our income is going towards the house anyways. Also, at the time I submitted the PROFILE in November, we had 40k in savings. When I submitted the FAFSA, we had around 30k. They’ll probably notice the decline, right?

Also, in November my parents said on the PROFILE they could contribute $5k, but things have changed and our EFC is 0. I didn’t think it was necessary to update the entire PROFILE for this one change though. Anyways, I don’t think this number is used at all, since anyone could put down anything.

Anyways, will I be okay with financial aid at U of M? I’m wondering how I’ll get my $25000 need met by getting so little from the FSEOG. I mean, there isn’t much else is there? And U of M has a maximum of $5500 in loans I can take out as well, so the rest has to be grants, and the $3k or whatever from work-study?

Thanks so much for all the info!

UM has need based grants, and they do work to help low income students. See this link: [University of Michigan News Service](http://www.ns.umich.edu/index.html?Releases/2006/Aug06/r080806a) and this link: http://www.ns.umich.edu/index.html?Releases/2005/Feb05/r022805</a></p>

Ah okay, thanks. I’m still a little worried though. Do you think it’s possible that I get around $5.5k in subsidized loans, and the rest (or mostly rest, my parents can contribute $1000-$3000) in grants/workstudy?

No one here can tell you for sure. Unfortunately, you will just have to wait & see.
