Effect of Dropping AP Calc on Admission Status

Hi, I am thinking about dropping AP Calculus because it’s so stressful and I don’t understand it and the teacher is awful and it takes away all of my time from my other classes. I ended the semester with a C+. I have been accepted to UW-Madison, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, and University of Toronto. I am a psych major at Madison and then a bio major at the other two (I’m indecisive and possibly double majoring in the two). I applied recently to NYU, Barnard (which I already doubt I’ll get into), Santa Clara, and McGill. How will me dropping the class affect my admission status/chances? I have a 30 ACT and 3.76 cumulative UW GPA (around 4.2 W GPA). My other current classes are AP Biology, AP Literature, Spanish 5, French 2, honors choir, and College Prep Chemistry. Thank you!

Nobody here can answer that question. You need to contact those schools directly and ask if dropping the AP Calculus would impact their decision. If they say no, I’d try to get it in writing. My Friends D who got into a competitive school ED called to see if she could drop one (of her many) AP’s and was told that if she did they woudl review her admission decision – so she sucked it up, kept the class, got a tutor, and made it through. Don’t assume you can drop it. And for schools you have not heard from, you would have to contact each one to let them know you dropped the class which isn’t a great thing I’m guessing.

I would keep the class and hire a brilliant tutor.

^^ that is the advise you should take.
You applications stated what your SR class schedule would be and dropping a class will Definitely jeopardize your chances of acceptance or even revoke your admission. College classes are HARDER than HS classes- so what message would you be sending to the colleges if you drop a class because it is difficult??

to be blunt- suck it up and dont blow your chances.

Psych and bio majors should not be impacted by AP Calc.

But it isn’t great to drop a class at all. And is that your fourth year of math, or did you double it? Would you meet any math requirement for entry to those colleges?

I agree that if you have the dough and/or time, find some tutoring and buckle down. Also review books can be helpful.

C+ in AP Calc is better than dropping, IMHO.

@happy1 I called UW-Madison, which is right now my top choice, and they said that they couldn’t say anything until I actually told them I was dropping it, so I was just wondering for a general idea of the outcome.

@rhandco I took algebra in middle school which counts for my math credits at the colleges that require 4 math credits, so this is technically my 5th math credit.

A major problem is my teacher who, besides being creepy and pedophilic, is an awful teacher. He never explains anything and then yells at you if you don’t know the answer to a problem in class. I think I’ll just buy a review book and use that. I’m not taking the AP exam because I already get college credit through dual enrollment, so at least I don’t have to worry about that.

Thank you everyone for the advice! If anyone has any other advice, please let me know!
