Arrrggg. Just got the email from TurboTax about this, I was wondering why I hadn’t gotten a confirmation about my efiling.

I have a Feb 28 FAFSA deadline for one school and would really like to use the retrieval function, hopefully I can still make it.

Most of my deadlines are Mar 1 (I’ve completely given up on the Feb 15 deadlines), so I’m keeping my fingers crossed the return’ll make it (well, that and the 1099 forms).

The retrieval function only helps to fill in a few lines. I believe TurboTax has a FASFA schedule you can print that puts all the numbers you need in one place.

^Good to know. And it looks like verification may be for things not transferred, so it may not lessen the chance of verification.

I was mainly wanting to use the retrieval function because it’s for med schools that specifically state in their instructions that that’s what they prefer.

Yes, 2012 Tax return with form 8863 was just accepted by IRS.

Still waiting here…

well I E-file the free fillable forms and form 8863 did finally show up today. I completed the form and E-filed earlier in the day. I just received E-mail that the return was rejected with some long code error that showed IRS8863 and student SS#. The SS # was correct and in the right location. So we’ve been waiting 2 extra weeks so they can get this form right…and they apparently failed.
IRS get your act together…jeez

geeps20 -

I had some challenges with the free fillable 8863 myself. The page for the student’s data is hard to tab through, and I couldn’t find separate “boxs” for the first and last name and even though I thought that was a bit odd, I put both first and last names into one box and sent it off. After the thing had bounced more than once, I finally poked around in the space and did hit an area that proved to be for the first name, and the thing has finally been accepted.

I say try tabbing through that sheet again, and give it another try. If that doesn’t work, send an email off to their help desk.

I used Turbotax. We need to file four returns this year.

Mine was accepted late yesterday, I filed via TT.

Does anyone know how soon after e-filing we can go back into the FAFSA and link our tax returns to it? Can I try that next week, or will I have to wait a longer time?

ace550 - You are my hero! Two federal returns and two state returns are my limit!

entomom - I’ve really liked TurboTax when I’ve used it, but I couldn’t figure out how to record self-employment income that doesn’t have a 1099-misc. And yup, three family members all with some kind of self-employment and only one 1099-misc for part of one member’s income.

I defy (and pity) anyone worse than me:

I’ve got 3 Federal & 6 State returns! D2 has 4 state returns this year due to switching jobs, moving around in those small eastern states and trying to keep residency in our home state.

Then I’ve got FAFSA & Profile for 2 kids, Need Access (worse that Profile) and several college specific forms of varying length.

hm1, I just looked and I don’t see anything either, all the categories expect that you received a 1099.

happymom…thanks…wow, that was it. There were 2 boxes for first and last name, but they were so far apart that I bet no one would know it…plus the box for the first name was so huge that it seemed logical it was meant for both first and last names.

happymom, la-la-la! You’re THE BEST! And I LOVE College Confidential! :^) You’ve made me a happy mom, too! You win the medal for “Exhibiting Exemplary Logic in The Face of Defeat” for resolving the frustratingly indiscernible, IRS Reject error for Form 8863 (which I e-filed by the way)!

The rejection description (copied below) says nothing about the absence of a last name. Rather, it alludes to a problem with the Educational Institution Info. You and geeps20 are correct: you have to tab (or mouse) over in the wide, Student field to insert the last name!

I had spoken to a very nice IRS Agent wondering if there might be an inherent problem with the form since it is brand new, but he was stumped. We won’t be the only ones to face this problem, so I’ve sent a heads-up to the IRS Help Desk at IRS.gov.website.helpdesk@speedymail.com where we are to email for help with rejections - and then wait 5-7 days for a response. Unfortunately, with this college stuff, I can’t afford that much time. I regret I didn’t think of College Confidential sooner - everyone here exhibits such helpfulness and class.

Here is the Rejection Reason (Note: There was a duplicate reason in the rejection notice except for a (2) after the “…Grp” which was probably referencing my other included in the form.):

Field/Xpath: /efile:Return[1]/efile:ReturnData[1]/efile:IRS8863[1]/efile:StudentAndEducationalInstnGrp[1]/efile:StudentSSN[1]
Issue : Business Rule X0000-005 - The XML data has failed schema validation.
