Electrical engineering job stability...

My dad is a computer engineer and has been through ~6 or 7 different companies throughout his lifetime due to layoffs. However, he does not have a hard time finding a new job after being laid off.

Is this a common thing for EE's? I'm not sure I'd enjoy looking for jobs constantly. Outsourcing now a days will probably make it harder in the future...

EE is a very broad field, so that pretty much equates into more employment opportunities.

EE jobs are not going to be outsourced…as far as layoffs…it all depends on what field you go in to. If you go to a tech company, there’s probably a good chance the company will have to lay employees off at some point. Go to an energy company and layoffs are not very likely.

As far as outcourcing…I was reading something on cnn.com yesterday about countries like India and China not being as attractive anymore because they are bettering working conditions, i.e. they require overtime, higher wages every year etc. This is exactly what happened in the west when we industrialized. The third world is not going to stay poor forever; the days of cheap labor are limited.

As far as layoffs, a lot of engineers get layed off because they often are working on new projects and are not needed to help the company get through the immediate future. i.e. an electical engineer could be working to improve the automation of a factory, but in this tough economy might get layed off because the factory can survive without being upgraded, although it will be unefficient.
