yay, made it to the top 500 :)

How do you know you made it to the top 500? Don't we only find out in May?

ENF sent out letters to the top 500 semi finalists last week. The letter said that we were now competing for the big prizes. 494 of us will stick with our 4,000/4yrs, but 3 guys and 3 girls will be miiiighty lucky.

what cannednish said ^^^

Good luck to all. FYI---I did email the Elks and asked if by chance the national winners would actually be notified before May 15---since they have to commit to colleges by May 1---and that much money could REALLY make a difference in a student's college choice. The email was not solicitous in any way--- a just wondering kind of note. Anyway---they emailed back quickly with a "we are sorry" that kids really don't find out to the 15th of May because of the number of apps to read over. It sure would help if the dates on this one lined up a bit better with the May 1 deadline.

Good luck to all of you! Is this the Elks Most Valuable Student competition? Do the entrants have to demonstrate financial need? My D is a sophomore and we are looking for merit scholarships. Could one of you post the website for this scholarship?

g'luck to your daughter, i don't believe it's based on financial need, there might be some questions relating to finances but i dont remember (filled out way too many scholarships!)

Thanks for your reply. They do reserve 200 points out of 1000 points for Financial need.

out of curiosity, did anyone from PA get an award from the local/district/state level?

Hi dyx!

I'm from Pa. I was notified at every level by the scholarship liason from my local Elks Lodge. I have not yet been notified as to the amount of my award, but I am a national finalist...so I know I'll have at least $1000 each year. I believe that local/district/state awards are decided after national awards are decided. Or maybe I just made that up. But I do remember something about PA giving a lot of money compared to other states (PA Elks money, not National Elks money) and that PA money is not awarded to student accounts until the second semester freshman year so that students won't drop out and the money be wasted...?

I think I'm remembering correctly.

There...now that was very helpful. haha

Also...I don't think my local lodge gives a scholarship.

Yours may.

I don't know anything about my district.

I think state gives money, as I said above.

Congrats on being a national finalist! Woo hoo for representing PA!

lol thanks, some CCers have indicated that their local/district/state levels had awarded them so and so when they were notified of their status in the scholarship...so then i'm assuming you haven't heard anything regarding non-national elks money, and won't until after national awards are decided?

I read some of the messages on this thread back in March and was rather dismayed that I wasn't notified like everyone else about advancing beyond local, district, and state. Then, on a letter dated March 25th, I was notified I made it to the national finalist level. I'm from New York, and I noticed nobody else on this threat (unless I misread) is from here. What the heck happened? I'm really hoping savoirfaire is right about the other monies being decided later and stuff. I felt rather cut off from the whole scholarship and kind of gave up on it after not hearing anything. Any ideas as to what might have happen here, and anyone from New York go through a similar run?

dyx:

yes...i still haven't heard anything about non-national elks money

and i'm hoping to be hearing soon...about BOTH!
