Does everyone who got an engagement scholarship get invited to apply for Fellows? Is it broader then that? Does every student who gets in get an invitation to apply for fellows? Trying to figure out the real stats of this process and what is really worth pursuing. Thanks.
Hello, by chance do you have any insight in how selective the Elon College Fellow, or Leadership Fellow programs are? Are kids invited to apply or can anyone apply?
My daughter got an invite to apply for a Fellows in a major that she showed no interest in. The email said they read her application and think sheâs a good candidate for the award. Not sure how they drew that conclusion from her application. She thinks they just send blanket invites to everyone. I wish the Fellows awards were for higher amounts. Even if she got it, it doesnât make a dent in the cost. Has anyone seen the application? Wondering how time-consuming it is, for a relatively modest award?
FWIW she didnât receive any other merit from Elon, which was a bit surprising as she is at the top of their range. My other daughter got a merit award from them with lower stats, which is why I had D21 apply.
My son is in the same boat. Did not get merit even though his stats are at the top of their range. He received the email yesterday to apply for Fellows.
It is basically more essay questions to apply. As you said, even if he gets one of the fellows, it really doesnât make a big enough dent in their high cost.
Same exact situation here for my daughter. No merit, but invite to the college fellows. All considering, it wouldnât equate to other offers.
Hello. I didnât see anything within the application that stated essay requirement and I looked.
It did state to provide list of activities accomplishments in various categories that I took to be similar to an activities list in common ap.
Where does it state essay? The Scholars Fellow did have essays. Son received email suggesting Elon Fellows and separate Leadership Fellow.
I assume they would want essay, but not a word in the application for the two suggested to him.
We got the email yesterday as well. EA Accepted w no merit.
Sorry - my sonâs letter was for a scholars program (not fellows) that requires an essay.
Looks like Leadership and Elon Fellows have essays:
Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellows Essay (approximately 500 words):
Reflect on your leadership experiences over the last few years. Share a time when you engaged in a significant leadership experience with others working toward positive change. How did that impact or influence you as a leader? How did your understanding of leadership change as a result of that experience?
Elon College Fellows Essay (approximately 500 words)** :
The Elon College Fellows program values passion, curiosity, and responsibility. What are you intellectually passionate about? Where has that curiosity taken you? How do you take responsibility for the future growth of your passion(s)?
Wow! I have combed that application. I did not see that. Will relook. The email they sent took us to the application once logged in. Nothing like that anywhere. Thank you!
My daughter was also accepted (with some merit) and got the emails this week to apply to two of these programs - business and leadership - each of which she said had a 500 word essay and then an overall resume/activities list needed. I think she read that 25 leadership and 30 business fellows are awarded. Good luck to everyone!!
There are many virtual events starting today regarding the Fellows and Honors program. You may register here: https://www.elon.edu/u/admissions/undergraduate/admissions-events/
Hey thanks for the reminder @HifromSanDiego! My daughter is just finishing up her essay to apply to one of these!
@mamabest @LD3790 Anyone is able to apply to the Fellows Programs at Elon. Them inviting you to apply just means they think you have a good chance of making it to the second round of the Fellows Application process. I canât say exactly what they look at for sending out those emails or that anyone who gets the email will even get to the second round, but I donât think that the âinvitationsâ to apply are sent out to everyone.
@CollegeNerd67 As a Communications Fellow and knowing people in the other programs, if your daughter is not interested in the specific major-based Fellows program there is no reason to apply for it. Classes are harder and there are specific classes that some of the programs are required to take. While the money is definitely nice, though small as everyone says, it is not worth it if the student is not into the classes.
Also for the essay conversation, I believe every Fellows program has come kind of essay associated with it. I know I had to write one.
Regarding Fellows applications ⊠The award is not huge but I believe the program itself is the big selling point. No reason to apply to a Fellows program that doesnât fit your interest (likely wonât get accepted without that interest, anyway). But, if it fits your interest and your student is a hard worker, I think itâs amazing. My FD is business fellow and itâs a great program. Hard work and high expectations, but also a ton of opportunity. They will travel together (knock on wood, silly COVID) to Dubai next January (covered by the program) and get additional stipend toward study abroad. With the exception of a few students last year who lost their job offers due to COVID, the job placement rate for the program was about 100% in recent years. I certainly wish the award money was higher, but I think itâs important to look at it as being accepted into a program of study rather than a scholarship per se. Cheers and good luck. I LOVED the process with my kid and LOVE having it behind us.
Does anyone have experience or more knowledge about the Leadership Fellows program?
Did you attend session last night? They shared nice overview of leadership. They also stated that application deadline extended to Sunday for Fellow & Honors programs. If you missed it. I believe they recorded it.
My daughter did not get merit $ but was invited to apply to be a Communications fellow.
Regarding Elon Fellow/Scholars Programs. On January 4th My son was invited to apply to 2 of the programs. We listened to the virtual meetings on Monday and Wednesday this past week where it was confirmed the deadline for applications was extended through today January 17th at 11:59PM. My S went to finish his applications today, and the portal was already closed stating January 15th. Did anyone else run into this issue?
My daughter had hit send already on her two a few days earlier but I would think if they extended it your son could reach out to his AO and they will honor that date and he will still be considered.
Parent here . . . my daughter applied EA and was deferred, which was honestly quite a surprise, as she has been accepted (and received pretty substantial scholarship assistance) from other, much more selective universities. I wonât post all of her stats, but over 4.15 WGPA from a prep school.
At this point, even if she is admitted RD, I canât imaging theyâll be able to offer the financial incentives that other schools (higher ranked schools) have offered.
So my question is this: Is Elon particularly hard to get into? Did I miss something? Elon has a program my daughter is very interested in, but Iâm a bit perplexed as to why this didnât work out.
