Elon Early Action- Questions

Well, I got in ED so ill answer some of your Q’s Merkur;

Before I got in I thought my chances were average for EA but I loved the school so much so I applied ED. I thought I had pretty good chances ED and fortunately I was right!

Why Elon? Well I have been asked this question many times in the past two weeks because all my friends/teachers wondered why I committed ED. I love Elon for more than one reason. When I started looking at schools I visited everywhere, Virginia tech, James Madison, Clemson, Furman, College of Charleston, Maryland, Salisbury and UNC-Asheville. Everyone kept talking about that feeling that you get when you walk on a campus, I never had that feeling and I began to think that was a myth. Then I went to Elon and I knew immediately that is where I wanted to go. Not only is the campus gorgeous but also the students are friendly and the faculty is helpful. The size of 5000 kids is perfect, not too big that you get lost and not too small that you know everyone. Classes are all small sizes, which truly help students (ask you child if they do better in their bigger classes). The rising academic reputation of the University is a plus as well. The programs in leadership and study abroad are excellent. The sports teams are good enough to support, but not the only thing on campus (Elon football is especially good Division 1 AA). It is the perfect combination of social and academic experiences. Elon stresses the importance of community involvement and service. Basically Elon seems like a college that has a conscious. I could not be more excited about attending next year.

Cost? Yes $30,000+ is expensive, and Elon does not have perfect financial aid. I don’t know your circumstance but I was able to work it out with my parents. I am applying for a fellows program and a scholarship next month. (BTW you can have your child apply for these before they commit). I agreed to work next year and pay for all my personal spending.

Another thing I want to mention about cost and another reason why I picked Elon. Elons graduation rate for 4 years is around 75% (compared to schools like College of Charleston with 40%). I have a close relative that goes to a $25,000 public school but will not be able to graduate in 4 years. He will most likely graduate in 5 (so that’s $125,000). Elon at 30000 a year will cost $120,000 for 4 years, so in turn it actually might be more beneficial (time & money) to pay a little more.

Obviously each family has their own unique financial circumstance so it is defiantly something you should think about, and apply for AID.

I hope I have helped!

Congrats to you pakjan6!!!

3.85 GPA, 1120 SAT (1680 total), Graduate of Merit, Junior Marshall, 3 years of basketball on year getting mvp, ski club (founding member), interact club board member, impact richmond (comm. service), stop hunger now, helping with church hot dog lunches, honor roll all 4 years

-top 15 percent of class

Is that GPA weighted, using Elon’s method (core courses, 5.0 for honors and 6.0 for AP) or unweighted?

our school adds one point for honors and AP, so yes it is weighted, but our school does not make it 6.0 for AP classes

if you applied ED you would have gotten in, idk about regular 50 50

Hey Trey, what work do you do with Stop Hunger Now? I volunteer at their Raleigh warehouse every Friday and was an intern this past summer. I even wrote a good bit about it in my Elon Essay. Anyway good luck everybody. I will also be finding out EA. Not sure if I’m nervous or not. I just got deferred from State (applied Engineering though) but got into Purdue engineering so I’m confused on where I stand. Hope they might have taken another look at my app after getting my new SAT scores from the November SAT (not sure if they will look at them or not).

SAT: 2020
GPA: 3.7 W/ 3.5 UW
Rank: top 30th percentile, school does not release rank due to the highly competitive atmosphere.
All of my courses, if not AP are honors.
AP course load: 2 last year (AP English Lang (5), and AP Biology (5)), 4 this year (AP Stat, AP Gov, AP Latin Vergil, and AP English Lit)
Location: Delaware
EC: Buddy Program (volunteer with mentally ■■■■■■■■ children), science ambassador (go to local elm. school and help with science projects/tutor), and yearbook (since 10th grade).
Intended major: English/Int relations? Mostly undecided. haha/
Essays: written with honesty and I think they are good.
My high school is ranked #49 in the nation by a nationally published news magazine.
I also work about 15 hours a week and have held the same job for 2 years.
I am also an EA applicant.

ascout, you have good chances…

I forgot to add that I recieved a 31 on my ACT and I’m a member of NHS.

here is the thing that people don’t talk about, sometimes if a person is over qualified, they will get waitlisted because Elon wants to keep their yield high and they might not think you really want to go there.

So you will probably get in, but if you get wait listed and you want to go there, then just write a letter and you will get in.

At this point in the year, I think some students may get deferred to RD, but waitlists don’t usually happen till the end of the decision process. So I think pakjan was referring to being deferred, rather than waitlisted.

thanks for the correction lafalum you are right.

That “over qualified” theory is usually posted by those who think that SAT scores and GPA’s are the only factor in an admission decision, when in fact there are so many other factors. And to the extent there is any merit to the concept at all, it would not apply to ED applicants who have promised to attend if admitted. In fact, ED applicants are accepted at a much higher rate than regular decision and they take applicants with slightly lower “statistics” in exchange for the certainty that the student will attend.

I really hope I’m not deferred because it may look like I won’t attend. In fact, it’s the opposite. I’m so hyped about Elon and I have been for over a year. One of my close friends goes there and he absolutely loves it. I even travelled to NC to visit last spring and I kept imagining myself walking those paths every day to class.

thats awesome ascout, hopefully we are class mates next year, let us know if you get in

anyone know what time we are finding out on Friday? It just says it will be posted on Friday

My understanding from ED and last year is 12:01 Friday morning. There’s an email in my daughter’s box from admissions, but she has forbidden me for looking.

^ ada, my D told me that she also has an email from Elon regarding her decision but she was was unable to open it from school. I won’t touch her e-mail, even if she asks.

I wonder if getting the email in advance of the midnight release indictates good or bad news?

My son got that email. It just tells them decisions will be availble at midnight. It also provides the OnTrack login instructions.
