D did not get a phone call last year but she got the good news when she logged in at 12:01 am. So don’t panic if you don’t get a call!

Just texted her to remind her what she was doing at this time last year… waiting for the news! Wow how time has flown, she’s already registered for her second semester classes.

Good luck to all the applicants for Class of 2015.

I visited Elon 8 years ago with my oldest child. She loved Elon, was accepted and it was a very close second. I was impressed then, as I am now, with all the things they do right. My son and I visited this past Spring and he also really liked it, but due to it’s increasing selectivity, it’s a reach for him. I think it would be a great school for him - we’ll see on December 20th if they agree!

Kathiep, when you mentioned that 12/20 date (the EA date) I decided to recheck OnTrack and looked at a section I hadn’t before and, it’s interesting, if you submit an ACT score, Elon lists it but also converts each component of the ACT score into an SAT value.

mhc - yes - I remember that from S1. That’s also why Elon does not consider the science section of the ACT - they are converting the reading, math and English sections into their SAT equivalents - and that is how they read files.

^^glad I didn’t know about that one before this…I had always thought that they converted the ACT to a composite…

doesn’t matter now though, but, nobody should be scared to apply with a low math score then…yuch…

We visited Elon this summer and they did show the film and it did bring tears to my eyes. My S is applying EA to Elon and ED (non-binding until 1/15) to Furman. As to why Elon’s ED/EA applications are down, that is a good question. On Naviance, for our high school, we have less kids applying to Elon this year than last. Elon was a really hot school last year, and the increase in selectivity may be part of the issue.

The odd thing is, Elon did NOT increase their selectivity last year. They accepted an overall 48% of applicants, which was identical to the year before. So “increased selectivity” isn’t a real reason - but perhaps PERCEPTION of increased selectivity is. Perhaps more people have heard of Elon, and it’s reputation has improved to the point where people believe it is more selective, and thus hesitate to apply.

I still think it probably has more to do with an announced change in admissions strategy this fall.

[The Pendulum - Admissions gears up for Class of 2015 applications](http://www.elon.edu/pendulum/Story.aspx?id=4308)

I was concerned when I saw Elon’s stats were down on the NYTimes story recently, still have no idea why something as insignificant as campus tour styles would cause such a large change in their application rate. On a small scale we had probably 6 students out of my 100 person class interested in Elon which is an increase of a few people, but that is pretty insignificant.

One possible explanation is that more students are applying to a larger number of universities and those who are applying for reach schools are more likely to apply Early Decision due to the higher acceptance rates while those whose top choice is Elon are more likely to apply Early Action and wait on their decision if possible. Obviously if Elon is a slight reach for you applying Early Decision is a good option but otherwise Early Action seems like the better choice.

You are right tfm2011 one of the main reason’s the ‘Ivies’ are up for ED is students have realized they have a much better chance of getting in percentage wise than RD.

As far as Elon is concerned I, as well as my S, visited the campus this time last year and loved the video, info session and tour guide. My S was accepted RD at Elon, he was top 7% and had solid scores. However, it was very noticeable that some of the higher level female students did not get in. I questioned this and found out students that did not show interest ie college visit, met with regional rep at the HS during the fall visit, or any correspondence with Elon were not accepted. Elon is an interest school as most you on this board know.

He did not end up attending Elon, but two of his good friends are there and LOVE it! One was top 10 out of 450. It truly is a wonderful place to spend four years of your life.

One last note about the new approach, many students visiting there recently are coming away not as impressed as previous years. I agree with the ‘if it is not broke, don’t fix it’. I have suggested Elon to a number of Virginia residents and they each have said beautiful campus, great place, but were not impressed with the info session. Bring back the video it was a perfect way to convey to prospective students what Elon has to offer and what it is all about. My S still remembers the core features and I too cried while watching it.

If one is not accepted EA, does Elon defer to RD? I did not take my D to visit before she put in her EA application, but I know she wants to go, would and would otherwise certainly show her interest in attending.

Yes, Elon does deferrals to RD. My D had several friends who were deferred from EA.

If you can’t get to Elon, it may be coming to you. They’re having local “Evening with Elon” nights in January in Atlanta, Maryland, NJ, Cleveland, Philly, Pittsburgh and Falls Church VA. Here’s the link:
[Elon University // Admissions](<a href=“Elon University / Undergraduate Admissions”>Elon University / Undergraduate Admissions)
We did one of these evenings last year, you register in advance, sign in when you get there, and there is a chance to speak to the admissions person (2 were at ours) afterward. So they’d know your D was there, which would show interest.

mhc48 if there is not a scheduled Elon nights “in your town” yet have your D email the admissions Adm person for your state and ask her to let you know if there will be any visits scheduled in the future, that she would be interested in attending.

My d was deferred EA and admitted RD. We did not go to visit until after acceptance due to the distance and my daughter’s play rehearsal schedule. We could not make the school reception in our state which was 5 hours away due to a conflict. My d called immediately after notice of her deferred status and talked with her admissions rep following up her call with a note. We did want her rep to know of her interest. Quite miraculously her spring break was the week she was accepted and we flew up to see Elon at that time, returning a few weeks later for a Phoenix Friday for accepted but undecided students. She needed to know she could go that far away, dealing with multiple flights and shuttles as well as fit in socially. She loves Elon. When she was home at Thanksgiving I asked her what was the biggest surprise to her about college life, she answered how easily she adjusted and felt connected. As a parent it doesn’t get much better than that. This long winded, too much info response is just to assure you there is not just one path towards acceptance.

Does anyone have any idea what percentage of EA applicants get accepted, deferred, and rejected? Seem like there are a LOT of EA applicants and last year a bunch of qualified ones were deferred!

Update from Admissions, re: the drop in ED applications and the number of EA application. From The Pendulum (Elon’s student newspaper):

Also Elon made significant changes to their application this year, and it’s unlikely kids will be able to use the essays they write for other colleges to apply to Elon. I would expect that to put a slight dent in the EA/RD applications.

[The Pendulum - After slow start, admissions sees second-largest year in Early Action applications](http://www.elon.edu/pendulum/Story.aspx?id=4670)

@hohum

I believe they accept just over 50% of their Early Action class then about 5% less for the Regular Decision, although many are deferred from Early Action to regular. This is according to the director of admissions which I heard at an open house in November if I remembered the number correctly.

What about the ED admit rate? It’s been about 80% the last 2 years - when ED apps were slightly over 400. Now that they fell to 348 I think for this year - does anyone know the number admitted?

The statement that “Early Action remains the largest and most competitive pool of applicants” is a bit disheartening. I was hoping, given the decline in ED apps and smaller decline in EA apps, it would increase chances this year.

I’ve been going up and down in my expectations/hopes for my D at Elon. I guess we will all have a bit more info in about 11 days.

mhc - the thing to keep in mind with Elon is that if a student is deferred EA - they do have a real shot of being accepted in the RD round - I know a few plus I have seen many posts to that effect. I certainly hope you get good news on 12/20 - but I don’t think being deferred is the kiss of death at Elon. Just keep that in mind.
