Today we received an email saying that the fed tax deadline (?) had passed and d needs to finalize fafsa. I have filed our taxes, just waiting for d to do hers to totally complete fafsa. College deadline isn't until April 1. Has anyone else gotten an email like this?

Who was the email from?

Fafsa itself. Yea, I thought it was spam at first, but it directs me to fafsa.gov so it looks real.

It may be your home state’s deadline. See FAFSA link and check your state.

[Student Aid Deadlines - FAFSA on the Web - Federal Student Aid](http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/deadlines.htm)

We’ve gotten 3 such emails now. I clicked above link, but those deadlines don’t have anything to do with filing Federal income taxes. I think it’s ridiculous!

Unfortunately my state does not provide aid for students attending college out of state. And they know d’s college. D is a freshman.
Ibmom2 glad to hear you got this too. There must be something wrong with fafsa!

I got the email and one was also sent to my son. I guess someone thought they were being efficient! We will not be filing until April 15th. My husband used to wait until nearly midnight and deliver it to the downtown main post office where they had employees waiting outside to collect returns. Now that he is retired we usually get it sent a full day early but never as early as March. S does not qualify for any aid but is required to file for an outside scholarship. After I got this email, I realized that I never amended last year’s form.

Say what? We got that email too - federal deadline for filing taxes has passed? Our taxes are almost done but not filed yet and D does not have to file and attends out of state private. I guess I will ignore this as I do not see any reason why it should be applicable to us but still I am amazed, okay borderline stunned, at the disinformation. If it is concerning a state specific deadline then the wording of the email could be vastly improved to say the least.

This is my second year filing the FAFSA. Did not receive this last year, but I filed our taxes early because of fin aid and my daughter didn’t have to file. With such inefficiency or stupidity at FAFSA, one wonders what else might be going on over there that’s wrong (like making mistakes on our SARs)!

I got the same email and when I read that the federal tax filing deadline has passed, I was shocked. Does this mean we missed the deadline for the FAFSA? Does this mean I missed the deadline for my federal taxes? I don’t get it. If this is indeed a mistake, then the people that sent it need to send a correction.

I received this email this morning as well. I went to the FAFSA website and it says the federal deadline is not until June. I checked our state deadline and the state where dd goes to school and neither has passed. I think it must have been sent in error - at least I hope so!

I received this too. I have one in college already and don’t recall receiving this email before. The deadline for filing federal taxes has NOT passed, it’s 4/17 this year. Has to be a system glitch. It’s not giving me much confidence in the whole system! :-/

Agree with lala re: confidence! I just checked with d’s college and they were dumbfounded too! But my good news is that I am right on track with applying for aid for next year and will just forget about that strange email now. Love the college confidential community–it’s great to commiserate with others here!

Hmmm…what an odd email. I’m wondering if it has to do with the IRS/FAFSA linking? Apparently it takes 2 weeks or so after IRS taxes are filed for that linkage…but even THAT doesn’t take you to April 17th…the IRS tax filing deadline.

Maybe they are referring to 2011-2012 year deadline.

I think you will find that it is June of next year. There is not really a federal deadline. People can keep filing 2012-2013 FAFSA all the way through June of 2013, and many will if they are starting school in the spring or summer next year.

This email sounds like some sort of silly system error. Hopefully the IRS doesn’t have the same error in their system!

Year five of filing FAFSA and have never seen this email before. The deadline for 2011-12 was June 30, with the late filing Sept. 23rd or some such. I did check the link above and our state’s deadline is June, our college is 3/31, so we aren’t late but I had an unpleasant few minutes early this morning. Tough to know when to ignore something as a likely mistake and when to panic. I second the opinion of loving cc community - the first thing I do before an all out panic is check cc! I pity the colleges getting calls over this.

I just called them and they have a recorded message stating that the email is in error and the filing deadline is April 17th. It says please ignore that line.

if you go to this link, a popup textbox will state that you should “ignore that sentence”

Between the FAFSA error and an email sent to my son from his College saying he hadn’t met GPA requirements to register for Fall I had very high blood pressure yesterday! The email from his college was in error too! First time in his three years away at school that I called demanding to speak to an advisor.
