I was recently accepted to both Georgetown and MIT via early action. Now that I know I won't be attending Georgetown, since I like MIT better than Georgetown, should I send a follow-up email to my Georgetown interviewer announcing my decision? I feel like it's the courteous thing to do, emailing the Georgetown interviewer back, but that could also come off as pretentious (unless I don't mention which college I got intoanother possibility.)

I wouldn’t say that you’re going to MIT, but inform them that you have been accepted to Georgetown! One of my interviewers was very kind and we really “clicked.” She asked to be informed of whether I got into college X, and offered help if I needed it. I’m definitely going to let her know, since I know she was pushing for me in the admissions process.

I think, based on your interview, you have to determine whether or not to let the interviewers know.

I wouldn’t worry about appearing pretentious. I think your consideration will be noted by the Gtown interviewer. Tell him/her that you definitely appreciated your time together and wanted to give thanks for any advocacy he/she gave you. However, regrettably, you’re going to have to turn down Georgetown’s offer.

That’s the truth and still conveys your genuine thanks for the GTown interviewer’s time.

I’ve been doing alumni interviews for many years and i have never had a student email me to tell me that he/she is choosing another school. I’ve had many email me to thank me for my time. Hopefully you have done this already. If not you certainly should do that. The school sends me a list of the decisions after they have notified the students. I typically will call or email congratulations to them. Some students follow up with additional questions or thanks. I never expect any more than that. I often get no response, and that’s fine too.
IMO it is totally unnecessary to inform your alumni interviewer that you will be going elsewhere. If you are certain that you won’t be attending G’town it would be courteous to the students in the RD pool to withdraw your application. But you should only do that if you are sure that you don’t want to keep G’town as an option.
Congrats on your accceptances!
