Here’s my situation:
I am a community college transfer student who got accepted to all twelve schools I applied to, except I’m still waiting to hear from one last school: NYU. Some of my other ‘top choices’ that I got accepted to were BU, SUNY Purchase, Pratt Institute, and York University.
I’ve narrowed my choices down to Emerson and SVA. Right now I’m stuck and looking for some more insight on both schools; like the feel of the schools, what the curriculum is like, if people thought their education was worth it, etc.
I’ve visited both of them, I loved Boston! It was my second time visiting NYC and it’s a nice place. I think there are more opportunities in NYC than Boston. Though I could be mistaken. SVA was like the tenth school I visited and was the first one I felt comfortable at.
Anyways, for film I’m rather interested in cinematography, editing, and sound design. I’ve made my own short films and had to do everything myself (besides acting) because I didn’t have access to people to help me, so I have some experience with fulfilling all of those roles. I really want a hands on experience, which both schools provide. Really, the schools are very similar to each other; they both have their own awards where industry professionals come etc.
From my research, Emerson seems like a supportive community with the whole ‘Emerson Mafia’ thing and access to TONS of internships and clubs. Though SVA seemed to have more recent successful alumni in film and they have some amazing faculty. I did like SVA’s student work better than Emerson’s. I did read that SVA doesn’t allow students to borrow equipment from other majors because it’s a ‘for profit’ school. I don’t know if that’s true or not (I know SVA is for-profit school)
I received 49 credits from Emerson and I haven’t heard back on any financial aid.
I received 33 credits from SVA and got a whole 5,000 a year scholarship… and no help from the FASFA.
Another thing both schools have in common is how expensive they are
Anyone have any opinions on these two schools? I have to make a decision by May 1st. Help.
