Emory, BC, UChicago, GW, UVA

Hey everyone,
I'm curious as to how I stand as far as everything goes with these schools:

SAT: 2020
SATII Math:650
SATII US History:760
ACT: 31
APs: English Language- 5
US HIstory- 5

grades: GPA-3.7/4
2 APs junior year (3 max)
3 APs senior year (5 max)

ECs
4 years of NFL debate (4th in nation at CFL nations, 6th in nation at NFLs)(team president as senior)
3 years editor in school newspaper (editor in chief next year as senior)
2 years of internships at the Massachusetts State House
2 years attending Florida Forensics Institute for debate
4 years yearbook editor (editor in chief as senior)

oh, and Emory is ED

FYI, there were a bunch of 1 or 2 year ECs that i didn't think were very significant in the large scheme, so what i have there is the best of what i have going for me

are you in state for UVA?

no, i am from massachusetts

Emory, BC, UChicago, GW, UVA

Emory- ED you'll be competitive. I won't guarantee admission but you've got a solid chance.

BC- match. 60% chance.

UChicago- same as Emory but you won't be applying ED. I think its a slight reach/ reach.

GW- match. 70% chance.

UVA- definitely your biggest reach. Its TOUGH to get into UVA from out of state.

by the way, it would be more helpful if you broke down your SAT I scores. Like if you told us: math- 710 CR- 650..... get it?

Yeah what's just your math and CR? colleges will look at that much more than the writing...and i'd say GW is even higher than 70%. UVA will be probably 20%. out of state = impossible for UVA. stupid school.

math- 690
verbal- 670
writing- 650

they are a little lower than expected, so im planning to retake the test in the fall. I also wasn't sure how strong a 31 ACT is...being from massachusetts i was the only one from my school to take them this year, so maybe someone can help me out putting it into perspective...it said 98% percentile on the sheet but its out of 36...so i was confused on how a 31 out of 36 could be that high.

A 31 is a pretty good score...I think it's the equivalent of a 1380 SAT on the 1600 scale. It would be a better idea to submit the ACT over the SAT, unless you plan on getting a 2200 on a retake of the SAT. (what does being from massachussetts have to do with taking the ACT?)
Anyway, everyone else has covered everything but: yes, apply early to Emory if you are sure. I am so mad that I listened to the stupid dean when I asked him if applying early helps increase chances. He told me it has absolutely no advantage to applying early and like a naive fool I believed him. I would have gotten in easily if I had applied early, but didn't get in regular decision. The ED admit rate is very high.

im not sure exactly why, but massachusetts doesn't typically use the ACT as much as other states. As I said, of the 350 students in my graduating class, i may have been the only one to take them, and if there were others, there weren't many. I found it to be a better test, but i had to go to rhode island to get it administered to me because it was closer than the nearest massachusetts location

You have a pretty good shot at getting into Emory, not a garuntee, but a good shot. Word of advice, keep good in contact with Emory Admissions Office and find out who is your regional officer, it does have influence in the Emory admissions process.

I'd say Boston College isn't a reach for you, more of a 50/50, so I wouldn't stress on that one.

Now, UVA is a different story, best luck to you.
