Just saw the 2006 price list for Dell laptops from the bookstore. Much less $$$ than the dell.com website; and $0 shippong fee.

Guess I'll buy the 620 B next week.

Get a Mac..so much better.

yet contrary to thine name...

Where did you see the price list? Thanks.

The bottom of the Emory bookstore main page. Click on dell configurations or
dell.com/emory

are macs cheaper?

No. The new Power Macs are more expensive. Dell has the 3 yr onsite warranty that covers you even if you drop the computer or spill coffee on the screen. Hey, I sound like one of Mike Dell's disciples.

The 620 B seems like a reasonable high end laptop.

Do you call to order? We live in PA so won't be heading to the bookstore until August. I did not see any online order form. Thanks.

Call the bookstore between 9 and 5 and ask for the computer dept. They take orders and submit directly to dell. There is free delivery to your home. They said 10-14 days for regular delivery.

I also purchased Microsoft Office Student Edition for $74 (includes Word, Powepoint, Excel, etc....).

They will have several reasonable HP printer models 4 sale at the bookstore when we arrive in August.

The customer service at the bookstore was very good.

i'm at emory to work at a summer camp now and we had the IT people work on out internet connections. They were doing great on everythinng until somone brought in a mac. they were pretty clueless. i don't know if this always holds true but it might be better to not get a mac.

I work in tech support for EarthLink, and we agents don't know nearly as much about Macs as we do about PC's. But the thing is, Macs don't malfunction, catch viruses, or break nearly as much as PC's. And when there is a problem with a Mac, it usually means the machine is simply broken.

I've heard from computer nerds that iBooks are worthless. They are overpriced because the cover is needlessly fancy. Mac does have some awesome desktops! The G5, wow!!

Haha, dont ask about the screen name. LOL.

They dont know as much as Macs because they just dont break as often; and dont catch viruses.

Macs are the best, I dont care what anyone tells you. GO to the Apple store and try one out.

Go to Notebookreview.com and click on "dell coupons." You can get laptops from dell that beat the hell out of those for $750, easily. I did just last week.

do more people use macs or dells at emory?

Haha, I'm a poster there too so I know enough about laptops to give a little advice to anybody who needs. Personally, I'm waiting for Intel's Merom chip to come out so my next computer lasts as long as possible and so Vista (the next Windows - predicted for Feb.) will work smoothly. I'm fairly sure that any Dell coupons will match or beat Emory Bookstore's prices.

I compared the alternative dell pricing and to my surprise, the least expensive price for the specific configuration was offered by the Emory bookstore.
The 620 B is a solid bundle, not too heavy and should more than meet my needs for the next 4 years!

Included in the Emory package is a premium warranty (on-site, complete care if damaged, etc...) and free shipping to your home. This could add $300 to the cost when purchasing a dell online whether you use discounts, price the small business link or the school section.

If interested you can see for yourself. I was told that if a MAC needs to be repaired you must bring it to the store which could add a number of days without a computer. MACs are great but I think the dell is more practical and better priced. As far as viruses are concerned, I believe it is mandatory for all Emory students to use Emory server virus program.

can anyone explain why latitude series (for small businesses) are more expensive than, lets say inspiron models, or the macbooks; even though the features listed are the same, if not better for the other notebooks

Regardless of personal preference... does it matter whether you have a Mac or PC at Emory... or anywhere for that matter. I'm thinking of converting to a Mac user, but I'm a bit nervous...

Does anyone else dislike those Mac commercials with the boring PC user and the groovy Mac user?

I'm not sure what the disadvantages are for having a Mac at Emory. Considering a lot of college students have Macs and that Emory computer labs have both Macs and PC's, I doubt it matters which one you have. Plus, you can load Windows on Mac OSX. So, basically, it's all about preference.

Personally, I have heard negative comments about the iBook. Of course, this is just what I have heard. Don't take my word for it. Because, as some CCers will say, anecdotal evidence can be a "logical fallacy".

@ jkh411: I'm considering switching over as well. Let's do it together; it'll be fun!
