Hi!
I'm a senior, and I'm trying to decide which one I should apply binding to. Both would be a stretch for me, so I was thinking applying binding would be an advantage for me, especially considering these are my tops. I'm interested in majoring in journalism or communications. I know Emory doesn't have a journalism major, but this is not a huge deal to me as I am not married to the major, and would consider political science or creative writing instead. Finances are a concern for me, so which one is more likely to give me more money is also a factor, although I am aware that you can get out of binding if it's a cost concern. Thank you!

Emory is great for creative writing. According to USA Today, it is one of the best: http://college.usatoday.com/the-10-best-american-colleges-for-writers/. Ranked #1.

According to this chart from the NY times Richmond should be $11’900 for the average low to middle income student while Emory is $17,600.

Richmond has great financial aid. It also has a great english department. Note Richmond doesn’t have a creative writing major, only a minor. If you aren’t sure where you want to go, I wouldn’t recommend applying ED.

I got into both last year, and therefore spent a lot of time weighing the pros and cons. The schools are actually very different. Emory is larger and located in a college town area with great access to the amazing city of Atlanta. Richmond is kind of in the woods and makes you feel in a bubble, which could be problematic given that it is such a small school. However, Richmond has better athletics, while Emory has slightly better academics (generally speaking, but especially for English). I personally like Emory more but it really comes down to whether not you want a secluded small school.

Emory has better academics? What makes you say that?

Both poli. sci and creative writing are among the best academic programs at Emory.

Although both are excellent schools, Ignis 123 the Princeton Review would disagree with you, as the university of Richmond has a slightly higher academic rating.

With regards to your heading, I think that you mean “early decision,” which is binding; “early action” is not.

University of Richmond is probably more generous with merit aid than Emory.
