Hi I was rescently accepted to Wesleyan University, UVA, and Emory College and I need some advice where to go. I am currently undecided on what I am going to major. I want a laid back supportive environment where students are allowed to explore different environments. I like to work at my own pace and learn for the sake of learning. I do not care about prestige and money is not an issue. I would like to know the academic and social atmosphes of each institution, it would be good if anyone who attended these schools could give me an idea of how it was.

You’ve described Wesleyan perfectly. No core curriculum, liberal arts college with a goal of learning for the sake of learning - no pre-professional majors on campus (business, engineering, etc.).

Thank you for the info… please anyone feel free to comment more and give me all your feedback

I don’t know a ton about UVA or Emory, but I agree with smartalic. Wesleyan sounds exactly like what you’re looking for. My friend goes there and she absolutely adores it. She gets a lot of support from peers as well as teachers, and her classes are amazing.

What else are you looking for?

Congratulations, by the way, it’s fantastic that you’re going to a stellar school no matter what.

I’m also lookig for the following qualities in a student body: liberal (far left wing leaning) student body, diversity ( not just racial but also economic), laid back environment ( I detest cuttroat competition), and a large amount of academic reasources. It seems like Wesleyan would be the best fit me, however, I would like to hear from Emory and UVA students, or someone who has any information about these schools, as well! Thank you for all your feedback!

the surprising thing about UVA is despite it being a public institution, how few underprivileged families send their kids there, compared to private colleges of similar quality; only 8% percent of all students receive Pell grants compared to 12% at Wesleyan and Emory: http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/college_guide/rankings_2010/national_university_rank.php

RedCzar, you’ll get more feedback if you post your question on the Emory and UVA boards, under “colleges.”

Either Wesleyan or Emory. First choice - Wesleyan.

Ive been accepted to both as well - I would choose wesleyan if they were the only two i was accepted to.

Have you visited all three? Many times it is a subjective decision as well as an objective one. If you like the environments all the same, then I agree that Wesleyan is your best bet. Congratulations!

RedCzar, if there’s any chance you could visit Wesleyan next weekend during WesFest, you’d get a good sense of whether it’s the place for you. Good luck, you have excellent choices.
Unfortunately I do not have the financial means to travel there, my family lives of welfare we are a family of 4 with no income (2 parents 2 brothers), I visted on the autunm of 2010 thou and I though it was nice thou it is the only university I managed to visit. They paid for the ticked and I stayed in one of their dorms, it was nice. When I mentioned money won’t be an issue is because they all gave me full rides with no loans. That’s why I need people who have gone to this universities to describe me the social atmospheres of these places. Thank you for all the feedback

You sound just like a friend of mine who went to Wesleyan and it was just about perfect for him!
