Emory reputation

how is emory regarded generally?

I know it is in top 20 but i heard some rumors that people from the West havent even heard about emory
is it true that it is only famous in South..?

also, what are emory's strong departments?

thank you in advance

Emory is well known east of the Mississippi. Can't say what the big square states out West know about Emory, but it is definitely true that people in CA who should know better, often haven't heard of Emory. But then again, they don't know about a lot of excellent schools. CA tends to focus heavily on UC's, Stanford, Ivy, "little" Ivies...Duke, and to a lesser extent, a few other schools that have football teams (e.g., Northwestern, Notre Dame). Big football tends to raise awareness.

Rest assured, the people making grad school admissions decisions and the "Ivy and Ivy-like grads doing the hiring have all heard of Emory and they don't base their decisions on whether the school had a football team.

How will the country's growing awareness of Emory affect the future of the university? Will Emory rise in the rankings? Will our degrees become more valuable (more nationally renowned)? Will Emory's selectivity continue and, in the near future, have admittance rates comparable to the Ivy's?

eh yes admittance rates are little bit too high, i think (esp ED)
um but i also heard that Emory is trying to raise its prestige/ranking with its enormous fund and i heard thats what WashU did.

i also found out emory was in top 10 (usnews) in 1998
does anyone know why it is only 20 right now?

I wondering about that also. I saw a comparison of the USNews rankings in '72 and now. Emory has one of the greatest increases of any university. What has happened recently? That is quite a fall!

Emory doesn't have an engineering department, while most of the top schools do. That hurts the potential applicant pool.
