What does everyone think?

Ohioguy218,

If you like Emory, then yes, it's worthwhile to apply to the Emory Scholars Program. With semi-finalists now being offered $10-15K, renewable for 4 years, and finalists being offered 2/3's tuition to full-ride over 4 years, the only questions to ask are, "Do I like Emory University?" and "Can I compete with all the other anticipated applicants for ESP?"

Your 4.0 GPA unweighted is excellent, and without knowing the number of honors/AP classes you've taken, it's difficult to assess the academic rigor of your courseload, which Emory will look at carefully.

Your standardized test scores are not as competitive as most ESP finalists, but they put you into the mix for consideration to semi-finalist, if not finalist cut. If you improve your SAT scores for CR and Writing, that will help you greatly. Your EC's look very good. Overall, you're on the cusp, IMHO.

Also, consider the Barkley Merit Scholarship, which is outside of the ESP. You can get more info here: http://www.emory.edu/BF/debate/scholarships.html

If you do a SEARCH in this CC forum (Emory)... looking for "Emory Scholars", you'll also find more information.

Remember that if you are nominated by your H.S., you will also need to apply for both Admission and ESP (separately) by the Nov. 1 deadline.

Good Luck!

Any thoughts on what offers the best odds of recieving some merit money: Emory Scholars or Goizueta Scholars? I am interesting in studtying business, but I will pursue whichever track offers the best chance of recieving some award, even it it's just 10K or so.

By the way, our school doesn't offer honors or ap courses, but I still have taken the most difficult classes possible.

Ohioguy218,

Regarding AP classes, Emory will not fault you for limited (or no) access to AP courses. They just want to know that you have challenged yourself with the academic rigor that is available to you. Your teacher recommendations will be further weighted in importance in your case.

My own opinion is that a student has better "odds" in applying for the Emory Scholars Program vs. the Goizueta Scholars Award. This is based on the number of merit awards that are actually offered. The ESP awards are many more than the Goizueta Scholars awards, based on last year's numbers. Also, based on last year's process (which was the inaugural year for Goizueta Scholars), high schools were limited to one (1) nominated student vs. four (4) for the ESP. As I understand, for last year, there were about 20 semi-finalists for Goizueta, and less than 10 finalists who were invited to the Emory campus.

It seems as if Emory is continuing to tweak the Goizueta awards, and this year is giving it less visibility as a "program" per se, but rather an "award". The Emory Scholars Program remains highly visible, and its parameters are well known. If your interest is in a BBA program, you do not lose any real opportunities by applying to the Emory Scholars Program, assuming you are a nominated student. Since you mention that your H.S. has never sent a student to Emory, I would urge you to immediately contact your Guidance Counselor to confirm that you may be nominated by the H.S. for ESP (Admission and ESP applications are due on Nov. 1st). If your Guidance Counselor is not familiar with what you are talking about, you may have to take the initiative. Either you and/or your H.S. Guidance Counselor should immediately contact Emory's Office of Admission (404-727-6036) and/or Maureen Sweatman:

Thanks a lot for the help. I really appreciate the honest advice.

Fortunately, the guidance counselor at my school is pretty on top of things. We were e-mailed the forms by Emory today, and hopefully things will turn out well.
