I also got mine today. (I live about 4 hours away from Emory.)

33 ACT, 5.3 weighted. IN

Made it to semifinalist--received email (initially went into Spam folder) acceptance on 1/16/09 and just received letter in mail today.

Stats-2100 SAT, 4.2 gpa, National Merit commended, 790 on Math II Subject test, 690 on Physics subject test, AP Scholar, Honor roll all through high school and CSF (CA honor society) all semesters in high school--community service and ec activities are all arts related.

I'm still not clear on how many finalists get selected and the potential merit award--indicated in the letter that there are 350 semi-finalists, and that 200 finalists will be selected...then it indicates that 70 will receive full tuition/room & board and 100 will get 2/3 tuition. So that only adds up to 170...Does that mean that even if you're fortunate enough to make it to finalist stage that there will still be 30 finalists who will receive nothing?

No, those finalists in that group receive full tuition, I think. But I'm not sure you're right about 70 getting full tuition plus room and board. Is that directly from the letter? That number seems high. I think I remember that there are about 25 Woodruff Scholarships that are full ride. The rest of the full rides include a number or scholarships that are geographically or otherwise restricted. So not all finalists are eligible for them depending on where they are from. For example I think some are limited to students from Southeast, or Atlanta etc.

Here's my understanding on this (based on the letter I got earlier this week, the Emory website, and reading around).

Out of the 350 semifinalists:
100 get a 2/3rds tuition scholarship
70 get at least full tuition. My understanding is that Finalists Weekend is where they decide who will get a full ride, but IDK how many full rides they're giving this year.
The other semifinalists who are neither of the above two get a $10-$14k scholarship (I've only ever read about this last group of scholarships on CC, so I guess we'll see).

My guess is that the 200 number is from "rounding" 170.

I called Emory on Friday to ask about the emails because I recieved nothing and they DENIED sending them out at all. I said that I knew of plenty of people who recieved them (a.k.a. all of you) and they persisted to deny it. Just thought that was humorous...and frustrating. Still waiting for a letter...

so if you're a finalist you're guaranteed to get something?

o.o.
They denied sending the e-mails ?

& Semi-finalists aren't exactly guaranteed anything, no.

sorry, i meant finalist.

Yeah they denied sending any notification emails...this is why I like dealing with LAC's better

Just called Emory about lack of notification for my son, but they never got his application packet. I know that I mailed it myself so it must have gotten lost among all the mail. Total bummer because he had all the right numbers to make it at least to semifinalist. Lesson learned for son #2 to send it in early and call to verify before the deadline with time to resend.

^^Tip: include a self-addressed postcard in all materials mailed to admissions. That way you know within a couple of days that stuff is received.

Wasn't the emory scholar listed on Opus? It has been cleared now and replaced with acceptance letter but I remember seeing status of material received on OPUS.

We had something lost in the mail from another school. We checked the online application status frequently and found that they did not have the material. We were able to get it to them in time.

So...I guess that means that if you make it to the 170 or 200 (rounded up perhaps)?) finalist stage you'll get something, right? So right now if you're a semifinalist, you got a 50% chance of getting some level of merit money then?

I think it breaks down this way. Of the 350 semi-finalists, about 170 to 200 become Emory Scholars. Those who don't become Emory Scholars have, in the last couple of years, received what is called a Liberal Arts Scholarship of 10-14K, renewable but not escalating with tuition. Of those who do become Emory Scholars about 100 are John Emory Scholars and receive 2/3 tuition scholarships renewable for 4 years. The remaining group of Emory Scholars, about 70-100, includes those eligible for a variety of different scholarships that range in value from full tuition to full tuition plus room and board. This last group is invited to an event on campus that includes interviews that help in the determination of who is to receive these scholarships. There may be as many as 18 specific scholarships in this last group, many with multiple recipients. The most prestigious is probably the Woodruff, which is open to all applicants and carries full tuition plus room and board. I think about 20 Woodruffs are awarded. There are other full ride scholarships but a believe many of these are restricted to students with particular backgrounds or from particular regions. Many of the full tuition scholarships awarded during this last phase are also restricted but not all of them. If any of you know that this information is incorrect please feel free to correct it.

As an interesting aside, about half of all students who are Emory Scholars accept the scholarships and attend Emory.

Wow that was really helpful. And it's interesting that even when emory is throwing money at applicants, their yield is still around 50%. I remember having a hard time writing my why emory because I couldn't quite pinpoint it's personality.

Actually given the credentials of Emory Scholars, 50% is a pretty good yield. Remember many of these students might also qualify for comparable scholarships or need based aid at at other schools, so they may not have a financial incentive to go to Emory after all.

does anyone know when we find out about finalist status?

My guidance office didn't send a recommendation letter for emory scholars (found out a month ago), and emory still told me I could be fine if I faxed it that day, which I did. I'm not extremely worried if I don't get the scholarship, but is there even a chance I could get through this 1st round even though a ton of you guys already got your decisions for emory scholars?

Actually, we semifinalists are still waiting to hear if we are finalists. Hopefully we'll hear soon.
