Good evening--I am a current Emory Scholar (or, I should say, I am in the program, though I am technically a JOHN Emory Scholar, which is a little different--they still pay though, so I remain happy for the most part). I'm bored tonight, so I thought I'd create this thread to answer ANY of your questions about Emory, but mostly about the Emory Scholars program (November 1st is not that far away!). I'll be checking once a day, so ask away...and apply to Emory no matter what!

What do they mean by intellectual interests?
lol...

To your knowledge, what is the academic profile of the people applying for the scholars program? What has been your experience with the campus/city in general? How would you describe the typical Emory student? What is the opinion of the stronger and weaker programs? Thanks for replying.

Is it okay if my emory scholars essay is very creative? I finished the essay round 2 in the morning and so it sounds increasingly strange. For example, I reference Rumplestiltskin near the end. o.O

phonyreal: intellectual interests...what interests you intellectually? haha I mean I think that one's pretty self-explanatory. As for me, I wrote about how I loved reading The Economist magazine because I love politics/history (and consequently I indicated on my app that my major is history, because I think its important that you show why you are choosing the major you put on your app, otherwise they might just think you're doing it to gain a slight advantage)

madville: the academic profile of the scholars is...well, if by academic profile you mean their stats,,, let me know and we can go into that a bit further. if by academic profile you mean what are they LIKE overall, I would say that they are all very intelligent and hardworking, and I would not be surprised to find any of these people at Harvard, Yale, and the like. This is in contrast to the general emory student population, which is still very intelligent, but I would be surprised if some of the people here got into better schools...

i had my emory scholars essay be a little less creative while my general emory essay moreso. since there is more of a prompt on this essay, that's the way i would go, but if you have a valid reason for including rumplestiltskin, then go for it!

hope this helps, keep em coming

thanks for the feedback

do u only need a counselor rec for emory scholar

i can't remember, it should be pretty clear on the scholar app though. if it doesn't say anything else, you dont need anything else. i think i remember a counselor rec and a teacher rec, but maybe i'm forgetting something.

you need your counselor's nomination for the scholars program. You counselor should already be doing you a rec for the regular application. In addition, you need a teacher rec for scholars

so you need 1 teacher rec for scholars?

yes, you need 1 teacher rec

so i got 2 teachers to write recs for emory. since emory recs are optional, i can use one of those recs for emory scholar right

yes, bigreddawgie, that is exactly what I am doing

What kind of scores do I need to be competitive for Emory Scholars? ACT/SAT

I'm applying this year myself, but it seems like if you have over a 1500 (on the old SAT) you should be pretty competitive...and for ACT it's around 32-33 and above? Those are good scores to shoot for. Of course, I'm under the impression that a lot more is taken into account too.

how retarted is my school. I didnt get nominated by my school, even with a 36 act and rank 11 out of 1017. noone above me even applied. i doubt they even knew my stats. i thought i had a shot at being a finalist for emory scholars, now i dont even have a chance. bye emory, i can no longer afford this school.

oh no! why didn't they nominate you? but that really sucks; I'm sorry

Shoot, I would have went up to the person who was in charge of nominating seniors and demand a reason why I wasn't nominated. You should have went up to them and tell them your stats or something to let them know you are well qualified to be part of ES. Sorry you have to let Emory go!!

If anything, you still have a few hours left to convince those losers in your school...

i think the decisions are final :(
i was really surprised by their decision.

wow yeah, that sucks. our school somehow managed to get away with nominating 5 people o.O
