Emory Students and Student Life

I'm a senior who is very much considering applying ED. I visited Emory and loved it; it's also very well suited to the academic subjects that I am interested in.

However, I also want to know about Emory in terms of social aspects. I'm a pretty studious girl, but at the same time, that's not all I do. School comes first for me, but I also like to have fun. Is there a lot to do at Emory as a freshman, especially when you don't have a car?

I'm also not sure I'm the type of person who would want to join a sorority. Does Greek life dominate the social scene at Emory? And is there a big drinking culture? I don't drink but I'm fine with going to parties. I just want to know if there's any pressure to drink or anything.

Thanks for any of your help!

Yes, lots of stuff to do…you’ll be fine. Also, Emory’s own transportation system is fairly robust (like the second largest in Atlanta metro) so if you want to get off campus and you still don’t have friends w/cars, you can exploit the shuttle system during the weekdays and weekends even have shuttles to Lenox or random fun places in Atlanta (the Emory Experience shuttles).

No, Greeklife hardly dominates the social scene. Too many other organizations that play a large role in campuslife. Also, the social/campus life scene is more so dictated by the ethnic and religious diversity of the school. Greeklife plays a role, but not anywhere as intense as at other southern schools with a large Greek presence. There is a stereotypical level of drinking at Emory, like most colleges, but it’s not intense enough for there to be pressure on you to drink. I think Emory campus life has improved quite a bit in terms of offering plenty of non-alcoholic socializing options. Organizations like SPC are to thank for that.
