This is a really urgent question so I appreciate all the help I can get.

I am a student with a Canadian citizenship living and studying in the United States (high school). I must make the point clear that I am not an American citizen, nor do I have a green card. I am here on a student visa so I am considered an international student.

I will be applying to Emory ED II and I was wondering if there are any private loans I can receive to pay for my college tuition for Emory University. My parents are not rich so I know they are unable to pay the full tuition of Emory which is close to $60,000; they will be pay to pay a portion of it though (maybe 1/4th of it).

I am quite aware that there are no federal funds available for international students.

I am desperate for financial aid from wherever because I know Emory is my dream school but I am afraid I won't be able to attend it because of the money.

Do you realize how disastrous taking out $45,000 a year in loans would be? By the time you graduated you’d have over $180,000 in loans. How would you pay them off? How would having that much debt influence where you can work, whether people would marry you or not, etc?

You have plenty of great options in Canada. If you’re smart enough to get into Emory, you can get into UBC, UToronto, Mount Allison, or any number of fine (and cheap!) places.

I definitely have backup plans just in case but I want to focus and try to work things out with Emory if I can. Do you know if there are any grants or funding I can receive from the Canadian government without having to pay them back like a loan?

I’ve looked at scholarships but most are a couple of thousand dollars here and there.

do you have a strong enough record to apply for Emory Scholars? Also, you should call the financial aid office and talk to someone about your concerns

I think the Emory scholars program deadline already passed unfortunately. I second that you should call the financial aid office. You seem to express serious interest in the school, so maybe they can work around restrictions regarding internationals, or at least you can hope. Good luck!

Emory is very generous with financial aid, but that is of course for domestic applicants. Have you looked at other outside scholarships? That may help with the cost. I don’t know how financial works exactly, but if you are an extremely desirable applicant, there might be some wiggle room. Again, this is only an assumption. Call Emory after Thanksgiving and see what they have to say. I hope you can find a way to attend!
