Correction: from current students
Also: what is the surrounding area like.

hey, i’m a current freshman at Emory.

social scene: the students here are very friendly. You’ll soon find your little group of friends if you get involved in lots of clubs and study groups.

party scene: don’t get too excited about partying on emory’s campus because a lot of them aren’t that fun. the frat parties are lame at most so most of the freshman go to georgia tech frat parties or clubs downtown. most of the freshman get ready to party or go out with their friends on friday nights or weekend nights so Emory at night time isn’t very lit.

academics: emory is one of the top ranking colleges in the US so if you really want to excel in your classes, you need to actually do your work, study on your own, and attend lectures. most students who play hard work hard are really good at it but if you slack off, it’s easy to lose track of your studying. classes vary in difficulty depending on the professors, so do your research on the professors teaching the course before enrolling in classes! I enrolled in an economics class and my friend enrolled in the same economics class but with a different professor and class period. her professor is a lot more accomplished and distinguished than mine so her class was easier than mine.

liberal/conservative: I try to avoid politics on campus but several people here are against Trump but we don’t discriminate or ban anyone from supporting him

what are the people like: the people here are very friendly. Some of the staff, especially those in the cafeteria, can be a bit rude and impatient. everyone here is trying to make friends so they’re all very welcoming and friendly but in a few months many people will quickly find their social circle.

overall campus atmosphere: everyone here is amazing and diverse so it’s never a boring day on campus. It’s a beautiful campus with lots of squirrels (you’ll see at least 3 every 5 minutes). everyone smiles at everyone and you’ll never feel awkward or alone on campus. it’s just a great campus, it’s a wonderful home, and it’s an amazing place to learn and grow as a person and as a student.

I kind of agree on the frat party thing (not to say I particularly cared for that scene). I think Tech’s are more interesting in some ways because they are less stereotypical and more willing to reveal the nerdiness they have as a Tech student. Lots of Emory’s Greek orgs. are very stereotypical (it is almost like they try to force themselves to be stereotypes IMHO). Like you aren’t gonna see them building things like they do at Tech for a competition or anything that makes you think “hmmmm that is very interesting given the stereotypes of Greeks, but it is still really fun”. It is just a very tame version of the same thing you would see at any school that isn’t “elite”. The only non-stereotypical thing is the high GPAs,( but that could be due to choice of major, grade inflation, the fact that it is Emory so there is pressure to simply have a high gpa, etc). and that just does not typically manifest itself in surprising outward displays of intellectualism and nerdiness (again, it is like some involved that here literally try to suppress that side, if it exists…and naturally show off how little they work to get good grades…it is very interesting to say the least. Seems like this is lesser the case for sororities) like at a STEM intensive school like Tech which honestly makes Emory’s kind or monotonous. If one wanted the stereotypical scene at Emory’s Greek houses but 1000 times bigger, one should honestly find a friend at UGA and go up there often/sometimes. Otherwise, find other parties on campus or use Atlanta as your source of fun.

However, on the flipside often they(Tech or others) come to Emory simply because more students (as in the vibe) are partying overall. Due to the distribution of majors at Emory, you are simply more likely to find students partying whereas at Tech, STEM dominates, specifically math, physics, and engineering majors, so a greater proportion of students usually do not have the types of schedules (you’re talking some freshman and certainly beyond that may have a schedule loaded with 3-4 STEM courses or more…at Emory, STEM majors are typically pre-health, so their STEM course load is much lower in order to maintain a high GPA in the sciences. Even pre-business students who are freshmen and sophomores are prone to intentionally having a relatively light schedule especially when compared to their STEM friends at Tech) that allow for frequent parties. In addition, as a freshman, you may be unaware of or have more difficulty accessing parties at places like the tower or popular nearby off-campus apartments. That is a whole different scene that freshmen typically have less access to or simply miss out on.
