Emory vs. Georgetown

I am a Transfer student interested in majoring in are Middle Eastern Studies and International Affairs. I was admitted to the College of Emory University, as well as SFS at Georgetown. I live in NC, so these are equal distances of travel.

I am afraid to go to Georgetown for the following reasons. 1) I am upper-middle class and cannot afford to keep up with the student body. 2) The food sucks, and I would spend all my money paying for expensive off-campus chow. 3) I am Jewish, and the campus is pronounced Jesuit. 4) The facilities are old and somewhat outdated. That being said, it is better academically

I am excited about Emory because it offers strong programs in both Hebrew and Arabic, both of which I study, as well as a solid Political Science department. It benefits from a large endowment, and contains state-of-the-art facilities. The cost of living in Atlanta is low. Finally, I can always spend summers interning in DC

Please leave me a recommendation with reasoning.

eih5

All dorm food gets old pretty fast. Sure the south is cheaper than DC, but Buckhead is not. The DC area has a rather large Jewish population (particularly in neighboring MD), so finding others to share culture and services (and Kosher restaraunts) should not be a problem. Of the Catholic colleges, GU is the most secular (and it revels in that secularity), but yet still ~50% are Catholic. Just being based in a truly international city, I would guess that GT’s language programs are really strong.

Tough call. Both offer oustanding educations. Just go with your gut.

GT it is stronger in your major.

emory is a jew haven. we will welcome you with open arms and lots of shmear

I lived in Arlington, VA (suburb of DC) for 16 years and I can tell you that if you’re really concerned about food you can always take the metro to somewhere (but that may cost you more in the end lol) or go to one of the many kiosks around the city that sell hot dogs and chips. Also, uppermiddle class is definitely good enough because most of the people living around DC are government employees, so they aren’t swimming in dough. And DC is actually a pretty ghetto place lol, so if you’re willing to travel to the less than safe places I’m sure you could find a bunch of cheap restaurants. If you do end up going to Georgetown, AVOID ANACOSTIA AT ALL COSTS!!! Especially if you’re white

“AVOID ANACOSTIA AT ALL COSTS!!! Especially if you’re white”

Because people of color will shoot him? Wow, I guess this is how white people think.

Jeeze, someone is quick to assume I’m racist. Actually, white people do get accosted in Anacostia just for being white. How do I know? Because I’ve been on a bus there and was called a cracker and the people were very insulting. It’s a very scary and uncomfortable situation. I hope you realize that white people aren’t the only ones who are racists…

Edit: Want to change “ones who are” to “ones who can be”

I’m actually a white latino and thus I know first hand that we aren’t the only ones who aren’t racists. However, I also know that we can make racists remarks. I live in DC and if you use common sense (~gasp~) it’s really not that big of a deal. I don’t live in Anacostia, but I’ve been there three or four times and yes, it is dangerous, but your warning you should be something like, avoid Anacostia, use common sense (e.g. don’t walk around in a sundress with designer sun-glasses). Being white alone will not get you killed or robbed.
