Emory vs. Northwestern

I'm going into college undecided, but I'm looking at philosophy, political science, or something business related. I really enjoyed the atmosphere at Emory (plus my best friend is going there). I haven't visited Northwestern yet, but I feel like it might be out of my league-altough they must have felt I was qualified in some way since they let me in.

NU’s political science and economics department are some of the highest rated programs in the country…If political science is what you want to do, NU is your school…

Since they are comparable schools, go where you are more comfortable. There are many people in your position and many of my friends decided to come to Emory over Northwestern. Keep in mind that your interests will likely change once you get to college (happens to most people). Nevertheless, Emory’s philosophy department is great so if this is actually your interest, choosing Emory over NU would be a smart decision.

First of all … a public acknowledgement to amadani and dgebll … both current upper-class Emory students, who offer and have offered excellent, impartial advice for a number of years now, here on CC. With the plethora of what at times is really BAD advice, these two are always breaths of fresh air.

I agree with Amadani here … each school has its pluses/minuses … and so much depends on your personal likes/dislikes. If you do an ADVANCED SEARCH using “Northwestern” as a keyword, and my User Name “NorCalDad”, you will get a number of posts I have written in the past couple of years specific to discussing Northwestern, along with other comments from others.

If you are interested in a student who can give you insight into both schools, send a PM to Blaze991 who is a former Emory student who transferred to Northwestern. He has an honest perspective and might be able to answer specific questions.

Incidentally, as a general rule, I tend to discount anybody who simply tells you what THEIR preference is, without giving good reasons, AND also understanding what YOUR individual preferences are. Just a caveat for a lot of what is passed off as “advice” here on CC.

I’m sure that many of these people post with good intent (although there are some whose intent is dubious), but don’t weigh YOUR future on the opinions of people who do not KNOW you. You will find most often that the answer you seek is deep within your OWN heart and mind. Good luck.
