Emotional Fire (Accepted, Deffered, Rejected)

Sorry!! I actually know how it feels, but I won’t state why (is embarrassing) :)

I am feeling extremely relieved, overjoyed, and lucky to be accepted. It was my dream school, and about the best christmas present I could ask for! My stats were extremely borderline for Umich, but I am almost positive that my EC’s in relation to what I wanted to study are what got me in. I was soooo shocked to see so many highly qualified applicants be deferred!!! My advice to deferees is that if Umich is really your no. 1, wait it out and keep your grades up–I’m sure they’re leaning on the cautious side because of all the EA applicants and switching to the common app and needing to allow for RD acceptances too. I would be REALLY surprised if a lot you didn’t get accepted RD, especially because a lot of people will withdraw their acceptances or applications to pursue other colleges, and so many of you are more than qualified. Best of luck to all of you and congrats to everyone else who also got accepted!!!

Can someone cut and paste the deferred letter, to understand what they thought was not good enough!!

I got deferred TT.TT

Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Engineering for Fall 2011. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review.

While this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, it is still good news. Your application is one of a group that remains under consideration. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than mid-April, 2011.

Please refer to the website [Office of Undergraduate Admissions: FAQs about the Admissions Process for Deferred Students](http://www.admissions.umich.edu/deferred) for FAQ’s about the admission process and what to do next. Strong fall semester or second trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward your fall semester or second trimester grades when they become available.

Because you are in this select group, we hope your interest in Michigan continues, and we will keep you informed of our progress. You have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful end of your senior year.

Sincerely,

Theodore L. Spencer
Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director

Let’s see… I check my email on my phone… Come across this:

“After multiple individualized and comprehensive evaluations of your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for Fall 2011, we believe that you have something uniquely valuable to contribute to our campus.”

Get excited. Come across this,

“However,” and my heart sinks.

Mich was a top choice for me, it really sucks that I didn’t get in. Other than that, I’m just hoping that I get into Rochester at this point, but even if I don’t, life will go on at Tulane, I suppose.

^lol, rough one on the e-mail bro

I am just super ****sed off. frustrated at getting deferred. I had a high enough SAT score ( 2100 +) and decent EC’s to get in . I also didnt get into my ED school which means Christmas break will now suck thanks to UM. Im sure many of you also feel similarly. I feel that four years of work in high school is essentially a waste as of now.

^^^You can blame USNWR and CC for some of these problems notincollege. With a 50% acceptance rate, which one constantly reads about here at CC, Michigan had become very popular as a “safety” school for top students. Now that the common application is being used, I think it’s safe to say that Michigan is no longer a safety school for just about anybody. It seems people who felt that they could always settle for Michigan if nothing else better came along are the one’s who are the most upset the last few days.

I feel pretty lost right now… While applying to michigan I felt pretty confident I could get in. I had a gpa above last year’s average, and a sat score of 2210. I let it get to my head that I would be accepted… These last couple days, reading these boards, my confidence level dropped. And finally today, I got my deferral. :frowning: Pretty bummed out right now. Michigan wasn’t my number one, but it was the strongest school I had a shot at. Plus all that research on Umich’s prestige and awesome social life got me pretty excited. It’s sad that many in-states got in with lower stats than mine, but really I can’t complain. Being a Californian, our UCs do the exact same thing to other out of state students.

Could it be that Umich is being conservative with their decisions due to the influx of applicants? I really hope I get a second shot at this… To all those who were deferred, I feel your pain. To those who were accepted, congratulations!

btw…if your oos or international, it is extremely hard to get into U-M. 5% of U-M student’s population is international, while about 30% is OOS. Thus, the admission rate is going to be low. I think 10% for international student and 20-30% for OOS.
