Employment While In College

Okay, so I have been curious about having a job while at Columbia College. For those who work and go to college (in NYC/manhattan), do you work on or off campus, and are the positions convenient while enrolled in college.

I ask because I do want money for myself, and I do not look forward to depend on my dad 24/7... especially when i am from Chicago... So.... Any input will be great!! Lol!!

Many students work on campus, esp. Fin Aid recipients. See the Fin Aid page for more info. At my Ivy alma mater, the minimum wage for student employment is $11/hour.

Thanks!! I will definitely check that out!!

Another question… If I were to work, will my financial aid package change immensely???

Do check out the financial aid website. Here are some more specifics about working at Columbia.

Minimum wage here seems to be about $9/hour for on-campus federal work-study positions. Plenty of people make $10/hour or more. Many different kinds of jobs are available, but some common ones are: library reserves desk, dorm front desk, biology/chemistry lab (for science majors).

If you are not federal work-study eligible, the jobs available on campus are somewhat fewer and you are considered a “casual” rather than work-study worker. You should be able to find something in the neighborhood or elsewhere in Manhattan that suits your interests.

I work an on-campus work study job right now and I find it quite convenient and flexible. But it varies from position to position.

I would speak to someone at financial aid about your package changing based on your work, but my very uneducated guess is that if you don’t make a decently significant amount of money (they ask for your tax information as well as your parents’) it won’t change it very much. It won’t have an effect until they redo your finaid package for the next year, either way.

I see…

Thanks!! (:

Your financial aid assumes that you make $1,000 or $2,000 from federal work study. If you don’t work, you’ll just have to pay that out of pocket.
