i was thinking of joining the EMS at my school because i find it very interesting. i know i dont want to be a doctor but i just find the EMS to be interesting. do you think being an EMT will help on my resume as a business major? or would that only help medical students get jobs etc.. thanks

I don’t think it’ll help you get a job in business (unless it’s a medical-related business), but there’s nothing wrong with wanting to have experience and training in emergency medicine. Depending on where you live, if you have a volunteer EMS service, you could join and serve your community.

I completed an 80-hour Wilderness First Responder/Emergency Trauma Technician certification course over spring break and I’m looking at upgrading to Wilderness EMT down the road. Knowing ways to help save someone’s life is never a bad thing.

Thank you for your reply. i was thinking that it would show leadership which would help. i would also think that they would want to hire people that are able to help medically if needed in a dire situation. i dont think that being an EMT will get me a job in business but i was curious if it would help at all on my resume

I really think it depends on the jobs you’re applying for.

I pursued the WFR training because I’m a park ranger and work in outdoor settings with frequent visitor contacts, so having emergency medical training is a valued skill within the profession. If your desired jobs are in an office building downtown, it’s likely not going to be viewed quite the same.

what about it being about leadership? as well as community service hours.

As a current EMT, I’m not sure how well I’d be able to sell the leadership thing. To be frank, EMT-B’s are pretty much the lowest part of the totem pole of the medical community. However, what you do as an EMT is what is the most important. If you are a volunteer that starts taking on leadership roles, that may be useful.

Still, I love volunteering as an EMT, and I’m very happy that I got the certification- it won’t hurt, as long as it doesn’t take away from your ability to do other, business related work.

thank you for your reply’s. sorry if i was not clear. i would be getting EMT certified and then I would be volunteering as an EMS for my college. so would that help with leadership? it also gives me community services hours. i dont know if that helps get a job in business

does anyone have an idea?
