I'm find economics at the moment to be very fun to learn, and have always felt this way about finance. Accounting isn't really boring to me, but it does seem more monotonous and straight forward which could be a problem for me if the profession is much of the same. Despite my preference of economics, I just can't afford to take out loans for a degree that will not pay off. The Energy Economics and Finance program consist of primarily economics, finance, and geology which sounds really varied and fun. The program is at Minot State University in North Dakota if location makes a difference. I appreciate all input.

If you want it to pay off, go with the practical major of accounting.

Accounting is more practical and a safe major. Even Finance majors need to know basic accounting principals. If you know accounting then you know how the business works. I took an Investment Banking training course that was very heavy in accounting principals. With Economics you learn how the business reacts to the environment and people. Both are good majors.

I’m graduating this May with an Economics degree and will be working for a Bank. If I would have done it all over again I would have done either Accounting or Finance but if I was smart enough I would do Math and Computer Science. Banks are recruiting a lot right now in the compliance or database security type of fields to protect their information.

It just depends on what you want to do after you graduate which can be hard to think about.
