I'm considering applying to the ENGAGE summer program at Vanderbilt for this summer, and I was wondering if there was anyone who attended/heard of this program and could tell me whether they liked it or not, and if they would recommmend it.

My knowledge of ENGAGE is that is offers guaranteed acceptance into graduate or professional school as long as the student meets pre-established criteria. I am not aware of a summer program. The Vanderbilt Program for Talented Youth (PTY) is reorganizing their summer program this year and calling is SAGE (Summer Academy for Gifted Education). They are offering a competitive program for 15 students to experience medical education under the guidance of two rising second year medical students (one of whom I have known since preschool years). It should be a great opportunity for those accepted. One of my Vanderbilt students attended PTY as a rising junior in HS and the other worked as a program assistant one summer. Although it has typically been a small program, I recommend it highly as both fun and stimulating.

I know some kids who went to PTY and had a blast. It is definitely worth investigating.

why do PTY when you could do CTY

Students from this area of the country don't generally participate in CTY, but rather participate in Duke Talent Search programs. S did these for 3 years, but they were all in NC and required air travel. He later worked for Duke one summer and PTY one summer and said PTY was, by far, the better supervised program. Duke offers a broader variety of courses though. For older students, particpation in PTY or PAVE can give students a unique perspective on Vanderbilt and aid tremendously in writing a killer Why Vandy essay.

Because "Programs" is a much cooler word than "Center." ;)
