Engineer Transfer

Hi, I am looking to transfer to UC Berkeley as a civil engineer. On Assist, it says

"The College of Engineering requires six humanities/social science courses, two
of which must be reading and composition. The only non-technical admission
requirement for the College of Engineering is the coursework equivalent to UC
Berkeley's English R1A and R1B (reading and composition), which must be taken
for a letter grade.

...
The remaining four humanities/social science requirement courses are not
considered for admission purposes but are required for graduation. See Humanities and Social Science (H/SS) Requirement Explained ? UC Berkeley College of Engineering for the College of Engineering
humanities/social science breadth requirements and courses.
Courses which are three semester units or more that appear in the following
categories on the "General Education/Breadth" section of assist.org may be used
to satisfy two of the remaining four humanities/social science course
requirements for the College of Engineering. ARTS AND LITERATURE; HISTORICAL
STUDIES; INTERNATIONAL STUDIES; PHILOSOPHY AND VALUES; SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES."

So does that mean I can't complete the H/SS Requirement and can only complete for of the six required courses?

That’s correct, two two upper division courses (one of which should also fulfill the series requirement) need to be taken after transferring.

Oh. So if I have two AP scores that help fulfill the H/SS Requirement, then I shouldn’t even bother with taking more classes beyond the prerequisites?

At most two H/SS courses can be covered with AP scores. You can therefore take two more at CC before transfer, leaving two upper division H/SS courses for after transfer.

At least one must be an American cultures course; a few CCs have courses that cover that (e.g. [ASSIST Report: FOOTHILL 12-13 UCB GE/Breadth Articulation Agreement](http://web1.assist.org/web-assist/report.do?agreement=aa&reportPath=REPORT_2&reportScript=Rep2.pl&event=21&dir=1&sia=FOOTHILL&ria=UCB&ia=FOOTHILL&oia=UCB&aay=12-13&ay=13-14&dora=AMCULT) ). If your CC has no such course, then one of the H/SS courses you take after transfer has to be an American cultures course (usually with a course number with an AC suffix).

In addition, there is a series requirement in that at least one of the two upper division H/SS courses needs to be in the same department as another H/SS course. You may wish to choose your CC H/SS courses to be in the same department that you are considering taking upper division H/SS courses in.

@ ucbalumnus If I’m understanding this requirement shouldn’t it be like this:

English R1A (prerequisite)
English R1B (prerequisite)
AP Score
American Cultures Graduation Requirement (taken at CC)
Upper Division H/SS Course (to be taken at UCB)
Upper Division H/SS Course (to be taken at UCB)

Thus the most I can do at CC is both English courses and the American Cultures course for the H/SS Requirement. Do I have this right?

Yes, the six courses include four that can be fulfilled before transfer:

English R1A or equivalent *
English R1B or equivalent
lower division H/SS *+
lower division H/SS *+

Any two of these three may be covered with AP credit as listed starting on page 9 of http://coe.berkeley.edu/students/advising%20handbbk%2012-13.pdf</a> .

May also fulfill American cultures if so designated.

After transfer, you must take the following:

upper division H/SS #%
upper division H/SS #%

At least one must be in the same department as one of your other H/SS courses.

% If not already fulfilled before transfer, at least one of these courses must be an American cultures course, or you can take an additional lower division American cultures course.

Thanks ucbalumnus. What AP scores, if any, can fulfill the American Cultures Requirement?

No AP scores count for the American cultures requirement.

Some of the upper division courses at Berkeley can also fill the AC requirement while also satisfying the upper div and/or series requirements, so if you don’t take it before transferring you just have to pick the right courses after transfer.
