Hi all, my daughter has been accepted to UDel OOS and they have given her a nice merit award and grant $. She's deciding between UDel, Rutgers, and TCNJ. She intends to study engineering, but she's also a gifted French language student and would love to continue her French studies. I get the sense that doing this at Rutgers would be difficult. Can anyone share insight about how easy or hard it is at UDel to do a world language, and ideally related study abroad, along w/engineering?

UD does offer a French major and minor along with study abroad programs (mainly in the Winter Session) in France. However majoring in Engineering (especially Chemical, Electrical, and Biomedical Engineering) are, similar to Rutgers, extremely rigorous academically so you would need to keep this in mind. Trying to fit in all the courses required for a French major, or probably even a French minor, would probably require a student to attend some winter/summer sessions (at additional costs) or extend their regular number of total semesters, unless one wanted to spend their total college career in the library/lab. This might be more doable if your D was able to get some college credits for AP (or similar) French courses taken in HS. On the other hand if your D wanted to just take some French courses as electives or to possibly to satisfy general ed requirements (as allowed) then this would be far more doable. Your D might want to check with an advisor in the Engineering Department and obtain their perspective/recommendations as to the feasibility of doing any of these things. Good luck.

Thank you so much for your extremely helpful reply! This is what I wanted to hear- I don’t think she needs to minor in French, just keep up with it a little bit and have at least a few non-engineering classes during her college career. I will make sure she finds an advisor to talk to about it, probably during the UDel Admitted Students Day next month. Again, many thanks. :)
