One of the main things that attracted me to CMU was their Engineering and Public Policy major. I've read all the stuff online and I think the program is great, since I love engineering but am also interested in possibly going into a career in public policy or law.

I'd like to know what people who are more acquainted with the program think of it. Is it fulfilling? Do employers and/or grad schools regard it well? Anything else I should know? Thanks for your thoughts!

One very important thing to know about EPP is that it cannot be your primary major; you can only have it as a (secondary) double major. Your primary major would have to be one of the traditional engineering majors - ChemE, MechE, CivE, etc. You do get to do your share of policy-related classes, but I think you would definitely find that it is secondary to your primary major, so don’t come in thinking that will be your main focus.

Everyone I know in it seems to be a Civil/Environmental Engineer (apparently it’s pretty easy to double count classes, etc.) though there are certainly students of all majors doing EPP. A lot of people seem to describe it as something that gives you an edge in the job market - I’m not sure how many EPP double majors go on to do work in the policy world, exactly, though.

Thanks! Yeah, I applied for civil, as well, although I may switch later on.
