I am considering majoring in Biomedical engineering. Would this be a good option if I possibly wanted to go to vet school? Would it adequately prepare me for the admission tests and the course load?

If not, what would be a better major?

Since Vet School admission puts a huge weight on GPA, you might kill your chances with a tough major like BME. You really want to find a school with a pre-vet advisor that can steer you to getting the classes and hands-on experience you need. Better choices would be Animal Science or Biology.

PS - my daughter had the same thoughts her Jr year, but after attending a summer VetMed course at Cornell last year, she changed her thinking to what I just told you.

Biomedical Science or Biochemistry are also good options. At one point, I was actually considering majoring in physics, but opted for Biochemistry.

I would love to major in Animal or Equine Science…BUT, if vet school did NOT work out (perish the thought), I would have a more marketable degree as a biochemist.

You can get into vet school with any major–one of my classmates was an anthropology major!! You just have to make sure that you get in your pre-requisites for admission. As stated by others, you will want to keep your GPA in tip-top shape as vet school is EXTREMELY competitive (most schools have admission rates of around 10% or even less). Hands-on experience is also something to consider (an Ani Sci major would be best for that), although you can get that outside of school, as well–you should be doing that anyway, working/volunteering/shadowing at local clinics, etc. Also, as stated, you do need to keep in mind what your back up plan would be if you don’t get in. Some degrees would be more useful than others in that case.
