I'm planning on applying to harvard as an engineer but their website says that admissons, even for their new engineering college, is handled by harvard college. Does anyone know if they look at engineering students the same way as every other student applying or if they have a set quota for students majoring in engineering? Also does anyone know if the acceptance rate for engineers is diffrent than the overall acceptance rate for harvard applicants?

Supposedly they don't care what major you say you are going into because something like 50% of students end up switching their majors anyway. So according to them, an engineer is the same as any other student.

I'm also applying as an engineer...I was under the impression that Harvard colleges treats every applicant the same

Unlike UCB, UPenn or Columbia you are applying to just the
'college' at Harvard. Hence intended concentration does not
matter.

While I don't think it matters much, I think the fact that Harvard is planning a major expansion of the engineering options means that they'll be on the lookout a little more than usual for top-notch would-be engineers. But they are still going to be looking at the whole application as they always have, and it's still one big pool, and there is no real expectation that you will major in whatever you've written down as a probable major on your application.

i.e. if you apply and you have all sorts of engineering related awards and activities, you may be accepted more because they recognize your interest pursue them, ability to achieve rather than that the interest is specifically in engineering.
