Hey guys, I was just wondering if pomona was a good option for engineering? I have the option of choosing between pomona and UT and UT just seems so much better for engineering

Why would you apply to Pomona if engineering isn’t even offered (and no, I don’t count the 3-2 program, since no one has utilized it in the last 5 years)? This puzzles me so much about a lot of admitted students who come to find out that what they wanted to study wasn’t offered.

If you are absolutely set on engineering go to UT. If you’re not, what else are you interested in studying? What do finances look like?

Pomona actually has chemical engineering, the major i chose at UT… <a href=“Chemistry - Pomona College - Acalog ACMS™”>Chemistry - Pomona College - Acalog ACMS™;

finances are the same and i’d be able to take classes at Harvey mudd i think so i doubt the quality of the education would differ

But you can’t really get an engineering degree at Pomona. You would basically have to transfer to Harvey Mudd (which is a possibility, but happens very rarely).

this is not true. no one who is pre-eng at Pomona does that. You can do 3-2 (rare) or major in math/physics and then go to grad school (common)

Harvey Mudd is a wonderful school. My S will list Harvey Mudd as top choice if he is sure he will major in Engineering. He has not decided his major yet so he might apply Pomona ED now. If he is interested in engineering later, is it hard to transfer from Pomona to Harvey Mudd? We won’t consider 3+2 because the financial aid package is not sure in the last two years. Thank you in advance for any input.

3+2 programs are rough because they take longer. Why take five years when you could get an equivalent degree (or two) within 3 or 4? In five years, people are able to come out of college with a bse and a masters! It makes more sense financially and professionally to go for the program that allows you to finish up quickly and move on with your career.

There are very few transfer students at Mudd, but there is one engineering major in my class who transferred from Pomona after freshman year. It is most doable if the student takes freshman core classes at Mudd or their equivalents. Like I know that this transfer student took some math and physics classes at Mudd during her freshman year.
