I see a lot of info on CC about engineering camps, but many are for girls and too far away.

Can anybody recommend a camp in the northeast someplace (or maybe midwest) for a rising senior (is that what you call a kid who will be entering senior year this fall?) that would be sort of an "exploratory" camp - something that would introduce several different kinds of engineering?

Rising seniors frequently take college classes at a campus where they intend to apply in the fall. Look at the websites of colleges your son is interested in and see if he could take an engineering course or two and live in the dorm at a college he is interested in attending.

Rose-Hulman offers Operation Catapult specifically to introduce students to engineering. Those who have attended seem very enthusiastic about their experiences.

Similarly, the University of Missouri-Rolla offers Explosives Camp. That's the one I'd like to attend if I were a few decades younger!

CTY of Johns Hopkins offers an introductory course in Engineering that my son took in the summer before senior year. He did not like it but it gave him an idea of what engineering is about and sounded very interesting to his mom.

Nothing wrong with the course. His engineering/science oriented mother loved the content of it. My son is a Humanities guy, loves literature, writing, philosophy and it obviously wasn't a fit for him. He went there on my suggestion and that was the last suggestion I gave him - that was in 2000. :)

My son and a friend attended a week-long summer engineering camp at the University of Vermont last June. It was well-run, a nice blend of field trips, creativity and competition.

My son went to a 2 week program at Drexel University called "Summer Engineering Experience at Drexel." We are local, so I am not sure if there is housing available.

Thanks for that. (My husband is a member of ASEE and I'd never seen it!)

The president of ASEE was the one who turned me on to it! I used to print the address out on slips of paper and give them out at college fairs when kids said they were interested in engineering.

GREAT site for kids who know they're heading towards E school and those who don't even know what engineering is!

My son attended 2 camps at University of Missouri - Rolla last summer. The first was an Introduction to Engineering that covered all the types of engineering they offer. The second was the famed Explosives Camp. I think the Explosives Camp cost around $450 for a week - Explosives Camp was only $100.

He had a great experience at both but has decided to attend Georgia Tech instead.
