Does anyone know of any programs at any colleges that are for rising seniors? My son is interested in engineering, and he'd like to do a program that does an overview of engineering. Many college "camps" are for younger children, so we're looking for something his age. Hopefully one with a residential option for him to stay in the dorm.

We did NYLF-Med last year, as well as NSLC National Intelligence and Security. They were both wonderful experiences, but we'd like to look at something more akin to what he wants to major in. He's interested in biomedical engineering, thus, the NYLF-MED, but wants to do something in engineering, maybe with robotics and computer.

It doesn't have to be something that will "look good on his college app". And he doesn't want something high pressure, that he has to be nomiated for and get graded on. It's just for exposure and to have fun.

If there's something not in engineering, but maybe in some sort of science or history or computers, that's fine, too. No writing or art or athletic camps. Just something that goes up to 17 years old and involves seeing a college campus.

We live in New Orleans area, and there's nothing educational here that we know of. Son loves to travel, so don't mind going away.

Thanks for any help you can give.

There are lots of engineering camps for rising seniors! Last summer my son attended Operation Catapult at Rose-Hulman, which he enjoyed very much. Check out colleges which have strong engineering programs - usually they will offer a summer camp for hgh school students.

And there's always Explosives camp at Missouri S&T, which ends with the campers creating their own fireworks show.

Frontiers Program at WPI

Dear Montegut,

I agree with the previous posts. If you look at schools with great engineering programs, they will often offer a summer program for high school students. WPI is awesome actually, and I believe started the first Robotics program as a major in the US. I have a good friend whose son attended the Mass Academy of Arts/Science there as a junior/senior, and now is in the WPI Robotics program. He loves it, as do many of the robotics enthusiasts locally. My middle schooler has done the summer Lego robotics with folks that have been involved at WPI, though we haven't done the program there yet, as it has interfered with our summer vacation date-wise. MIT also has summer programs.

I just looked at UPenn and they have a number of summer opportunities for high school students. You mentioned bio-engineering, so it prompted me to check their website. My oldest son is a Bio-Eng freshman currently at Penn.

I myself am browsing for a summer opportunity for my middle son who will be a rising senior as well. He has the gift of languages, so I'm hoping to find something that fits with his desire to advance his skills, as well as a situation that helps him prepare for college away. Last summer he and my older son went to Nice, France and studied at Actilangue, an international language school. The trip was amazing for them, and of course my younger son would like to return, but also wants to try something different. If anyone has any ideas of how to combine both college preparation and foreign language somewhere, at a reasonable cost, I'd love your thoughts.

Best of luck.
