Engineering/Community College Major confusion!!

So I was supposed to be enrolled in Mechatronics Engineering in a community college with a plan to transfer after my two years but when i found out that I couldn’t transfer my credits to my desired university, I decided to just do an associate’s degree on engineering (computer engineering specifically) since the course is specially designed to land a job right off the bat and not a transferrable course.

They made me pick from a catalog of courses and there was a computer science one, and an engineering one. I thought, well I want to pursue computer engineering now so, I picked the engineering one. One of my classes for the next semester is a programming class in C++ and so I was wondering are these just my general classes I have to take before I go study what is specifically required for Computer Engineering when I do end up transferring to the university I want? A lot of my classes for the first sem are also pre-requisites.

Is that how it works? that you have to take pre-requisites and general required engineering stuff before you can actually pick what part of the engineering world you want to specialize in (computer, civil, aerospace, mechanical, electrical, etc.)? If so when? And should I have picked computer science instead of engineering?

I’m concerned that I might continue on just taking general engineering stuff without getting the chance to narrow it down to what I specifically want to do in engineering. Another concern I have is that, transferring to the university, if my credit would still transfer when i do get the chance to choose what area of engineering I want to be a part of since it’s all pre-reqs and general stuff.

I hope this wasn’t too confusing and someone actually understands the point I’m trying to send across.

Update: when I did pick the engineering course, the adviser told me that it’s a guarantee that my credits will transfer since they follow the same curriculum as the university I wanted to go to.

Yes this works with every major. Pre req and basic courses for that field. Follow the course guideline and make sure you’re taking them so you can graduate with required credits. If you’re taking engineering courses they should be transferable to mechatronics.
