My son was just accepted OOS to Engineering. We are not familiar with the campus and wondering what the best dorms would be for Engineering students. Hoping for honors-- is location of honors dorms good for Engineering School?

Don’t worry about location. For a school with UTs student population size, the campus is pretty compact. Students walk all the time -to the dining halls, the gym, classes outside the department, study sessions, shopping, etc.
Living in the honors quad can make meeting with honors study groups more convenient since honors students take some classes together. Residential FIG living is another option. However, you may want to also consider Jester. My son lives there and loves it. He is an ASE major and his roommate is in ECE. All their neighbors are also engineering majors. There is an engineering advising office and a tutoring center in Jester, so even though it is not super close to the engineering buildings, Jester is great choice for engineers.
Most engineering majors live in Simkins which is an all-male dorm. The reason being is that it is nearby all the engineering buildings such as the Crockrell Engineering Building (CEB) and the Chemical Petroleum Engineering building.

The only down side is that it is far from the PCL library (well, for some people it is far) but you can take the FA bus which takes you around campus. Also, the CEB has a library is a “hangout” for engineering majors so I doub’t your son will need to venture further then this area.

The only downside to Simkins is that it seems secluded from everything else is an all male dorm and some students choose not to live their because of its past history.

I don’t believe that most engineering majors live in Simkins. Simkins is usually low on the list as far as most student’s dorm choices. It is a good location for engineering, but it is quite a hike to Kinsolving or Jester for food! (Food seems to be rather important to college boys!)

The honors quad is a great location for Engineering, plus it is close to the drag and just across the street from Kinsolving (best food on campus)

I do agree with an earlier post, that the campus is pretty compact, so nothing is that far away.

Can kids who aren’t in an honors program stay in the honors quad? Forgive me if this is a stupid question!

Not a stupid question! It is my understanding that anyone is free to apply for honors housing. Depending on the demand from honors students, if there are openings, they can be filled with non-honors students. I also read somewhere last year that if you have a roomate in honors, you can live in honors. I think it is pretty hard to get in except for the roomate route, but it never hurts to try!
