Engineering..help or hurt chances?

I am a high school senior getting ready to apply to colleges. I haven't exactly picked my major, but I was always considering a Biology major and possibly going on to medical or vet school. However, lately I have been told to consider majoring in biomedical engineering because it is a growing field and I will have met the med/vet school requirements if that is what I end up wanting to do. I'm not sure if applying as an engineering major would help or hurt my chances to a competitive school though..some of my reaches include Brown and Johns Hopkins...because the biomedical major is small and my math scores aren't the most impressive part of my resume..Because of my school's inflexibility in classes I haven't taken calculus yet and haven't taken the math SAT2. but on the other hand people say schools are looking for girls in engineering. I'm really not totally sold on engineering though, and I don't know how difficult it is to move into or out of an engineering program. Any thoughts?
