lol! sorry about the screename.

So, now that we've debated suicide rates for three pages, how about academics?

Myth is that Cornell has extreme grade deflation and is an extremely hard school to graduate from. Haven't heard the same about NW. Is this true?

Maybe someone has graduation rate data, specifically at the engineering colleges, of these two schools?

When I attended Cornell, the Engineering College's cutoff for dean's list recognition was much lower than the Arts college's cutoff, so that meant something at that time. I don't know about now, though.

Cornell was very tough, and I don't think this has changed. Do not come if you are not expecting to work very hard.

But I really doubt that is much different at Northwestern's engineering college, from what I've heard thirdhand from my daughter's friends.

I don't know about current comparative grading policies though.

Cornell is much better than NU. This argument shouldn't even be there, its a joke.

Cornell hands down!!!!!!!!!!!

I love seeing the posts that actually try to answer the question in a (sort of) in-depth manner, and then seeing those people who post things like:

“Cornell is much better than NU. This argument shouldn't even be there, its a joke.”

OR:

“Cornell hands down!!!!!!!!!!!”

Ahh, Collegeconfidential….

I'm with you kk. ^^ I mean I like Cornell, but saying Cornell is part of the Ivy League is like saying Ronnie Wood is a Rolling Stone--yeah, he's as good as the others, but when the others were establishing themselves, he was nowhere to be found.

There is an outrageous East Coast bias on cc. Anytime Alexandre promotes Michigan, Barrons promotes Wisconsin, or KK defends Northwestern, it's like the minutemen gather at the Old North Church and plan an attack at the Heartland. I grew up in the Midwest, and moved to the Boston area to finish high school and do my entire undergrad years. My family and I were shocked at the ignorance Easterners had about the rest of the country. People at work asked my father if there were buffalo and Indians rampaging around Michigan. My final year at BC I boarded with a Williams grad who was president of a large mutual fund empire, and he and his wife went to Chicago on business, and came back surprised at the level of civilization they found.

I recall in the mid-70s going to my dentist in Massachusetts, and he said he could tell from how good my teeth were that I wasn't from New England. He said the water and the dentistry in the Northeast were behind the times. I asked him who was on the cutting edge of dentistry, and he said Washington University in St. Louis.

TourGuide, what a great read. Since your teeth are so great, NU is obviously better than Cornell. Thank you for that enlightenment.

Sam Lee, like me, has one foot in the East (Barrow) and one in the Midwest (Northwestern). I'd like to hear his views.

I would also have to say that Cornell is safer than NU. Out in the Midwest, the Native Americans are getting a little restless on their reservations. Who knows what kind of war could result.

MK, you're a typical ignorant East Coast smart@ss. I think the other people here will get my point...NU is discounted significantly just because it's in the Midwest. People in the East tend to find it incomprehensible that they don't have a monopoly on intelligence.

By the way, tell Joe Torre I said good luck.

Ahh, Collegeconfidential . "Ok so let's hear our majesty...Prove that northwestern is better then Cornell.let's see what you got.

"saying Cornell is part of the Ivy League is like saying Ronnie Wood is a Rolling Stone--yeah, he's as good as the others, but when the others were establishing themselves, he was nowhere to be found"

Good analogy, but only works when discussing the actual founding of the universities. The Ivy league was formed well after all of the universities were established. It's more like "When Harvard and Yale were establishing themselves, where was Cornell??"

TourGuide446,

I know exactly what you mean. You need to be careful; perhaps many Northeasterns are about to riot after seeing Stanford/Berkeley winning Nobels one after another. :)

I hope you don't mind that I am a little snobbish like many Northeasterners. pateta00 and TheMK99 haven't gotten into any school of NU/Cornell's caliber. I personally wouldn't take what they say about top schools seriously.

TheMK99,
Instead of making insensitive comment about Native Americans here, you may want to spend more time to improve your SAT from that 1770. Good luck!

"Biography:
Made in Hong Kong and polished at Northwestern/Stanford " shame on you i hope these are fictitious information it would be a shame to know that a student from these universities can write bright comments like this "pateta00 and TheMK99 haven't gotten into any school of NU/Cornell's caliber. I personally wouldn't take what they say about top schools seriously." Definitely...yourself included!!!!

My statement has some element of truth, doesn't it? LOL!
Are you an engineering major? What do you know about engineering? Did you take any class at either school? Where are you anyway? Brazil? US News ranks NU a bit higher in industrial engg. So what did your comment "Cornell hands down!" base on?

i was an engineering major.i studied Mechanical engineer from 2002 to december 2005.I from brazil but i'm in the USA right now visiting some schools and taking acting classes."US News ranks NU a bit higher in industrial engg. So what did your comment "Cornell hands down!" base on?" Based on information given by my professors while i was studying eng. they used to talk a lot about Cornell MIT Stanford Berkeley Caltech...Plus the research oportunities at Cornell are fantastic.I just gave my opinnion i've never said Cornell is better than NU i said that i would choose cornell hands down.I have nothing against Northwestern , i'm applying there that's my 1 choice school , but if i was into eng. and could choose btw both i would go with Cornell.

Your profs are mechanical engg profs. In mechanical, Cornell>NU. But the OP is interested in IE, which is a totally different animal.
