Hi. I am a freshman biomedical engineering student at UT Austin. I want/need to take engineering physics 2 over the summer in a 6 week session, along with the lab for it (the class numbers for this at UT are 303L and 103N). I have looked at ACC, but it has an 11 week session for this class, and UT itself has a 9 week session. I cannot spare enough time in the summer to take that much time for the class. Does anyone know a way to take engineering physics 2 over the summer in 6 weeks? Thanks a lot and Hook’em!
Note: I live in Austin so am looking for options in that region.
Last summer one of my friends took it online from West Texas A&M. It included the lab component. Might be worth a look.
2nd Note: I am premed, so I am worried about the risks of taking an online class. If anyone has info on how med schools look at online courses, that would be much appreciated.
My son also took it online at West Texas. Seems like a lot of engineering students take required physics online at West Texas as the physics at UT is highly demanding.
University of Texas allows an online physics option for their engineers? Wow. Not possible at my kids school.
I would rather not take this class online, but am unaware of any 6-week summer class options for this class.
I’m a UT Parent. Did you talk to your advisor to see if you are ALLOWED to take a course outside of UT for Physics2? This is very important for premed students. Don’t do anything without advisor sign off. As for engineering students - that lab is a requirement which is why many take the ACC course. Each major gets different recommendations.
I have talked with advisors and they say it’s ok to take physics 2 at say, ACC since it has the lab. However, as stated above, this is an 11-week course, and I have peers that have found approved courses for engineering physics 2 with a lab at community colleges that are only about 5 weeks long. I want to find a physical location to take this course along with the lab for around 6 weeks, which does not seem like a possibility here in Austin.
Are you looking outside your locale? Where is it your peers went? You might have to travel. Get the list of acceptable credit transfer institutions form your adviser or your successful peers. What is the problem with the UT 9 week option that can’t be rearranged?
I have various plans over the summer including research and do not believe I can manage to get everything I need to get done and take a 9-week course.
Is it a retake though (or the result of a retake of 1)? If you don’t get it your course will be off track? Freshman research vs freshman vital course class might mean you need to choose wisely.
Why aren’t you taking Physics 2 this semester?
Physics 1 & 2 should have been completed by the end of freshmen year. They even gave credits for both Physics 1 and 2 if you took the AP exams with satisfactory scores.
Agree with all of the above and will add that premed has lots of different rules about taking your major classes not at UT! Get pre-Health advising before you do anything. Also look at the transfer equivalency website and you should be able to nail down which schools transfer.
For my major, Physics 2 is supposed to be taken the first semester sophomore year. I still have to take some other courses to qualify some prereqs for later classes, so I want to take physics 2 over the summer. I took physics 1 my first semester and did not do AP physics so I did not get credit for that.
I know you are trying to find something in Austin but I did Physics 2 at Lone Star in Houston last summer. It was a 5 week course offered both in June and mid July. 2 hours of lecture and 2 hours of lab each day. As I recall you couldn’t sign up until the first of March.
Again, if you are behind in your major reqs and co reqs, your plans for summer should prioritise those over social/research. So you are behind in other courses as well as physics?
Other Texas Parents at UT of PreMeds are saying Only CC or 4 year accredited school and must be in person not an online class. The lab is mandatory.
Not really behind if I can take physics over the summer. I just want to take a 6-week course for it, which some people I know can do, instead of the 9-week one at UT.
I did a quick search in Austin area course schedules. It seems that most Community colleges and 4-year colleges in Austin area do not offer calculus based PHY II at all, except ACC offered in 9-weeks. UT- SA offers PHYS II for Scientists&Engr with Lab in summer II last year. That can be your shortest drive from Austin for a short second summer PHYS II. Check with your advisor if UT-SA PHY1963 & PHY1971(Lab) transferable if you have no other choice. Good Luck!
